Purpose of the slide show:

The purpose of this slideshow is to convince the audience to
put the story into the English 9 Textbook. The Swan is a
compelling narration with captivating characters. This short
story should be used in an English textbook because it is
riveting with plenty of unexpected twists and a thought
provoking theme to leave readers in their minds.

Summary of The Swan :

15 year old Ernie and his best friend Raymond go out to hunt by a
lake when they spot Peter Watson. Being the bullies they are and
not being too fond of his character, they confronted him and
threatened him with a gun, assuming he was spying on them.
They harass Peter and make him do explicit things, such as tying
him to the train tracks. Eventually they end up killing a swan for
sport, much to Peters dismay. They continue to break him down
physically and mentally until it would seem he has had enough.

Setting:

The setting of the story is

in a field surrounded by
trees and consists of a lake
in the middle.

This story reaches

its climax when
Ernie and
Raymond force
Peter climb to the
top of the tree.

Mood :
The mood of this story is dark and twisted, with two
sides clashing, good and evil. The explicit situations that
Peter is thrown into adds a riveting and intriguing effect
to the feeling and tone the story. Peters moral compass,
thinking, and positive mindset contrasts to this. The
story is still being able to grip their attention and give an
important eye opening lesson.

Conflict
The main conflict is individual vs. individual. Peter was
defending himself against Ernie and Raymond. Ernie and
Raymond taunted and bullied Peter, yet Peter didnt have
a way to defend himself.
