Class: Grade 6 Tech/Science Teacher: Kaitlyn Parlee

This lesson plan is for a 6th grade tech/science class on their final project about pollution. Students will choose between two project options: 1) calculating their own pollution footprint and ways to reduce it, or 2) designing a new method to reduce a specific type of pollution. They will present their projects and submit a 500 word write up. The lesson aims to have students explore how pollution can be reduced and meet curriculum expectations around using technology safely and effectively to solve problems and communicate information. Students will work individually or in small groups, and the teacher will use various teaching strategies like conferencing, investigation, and think-pair-share. Projects will be assessed through observation, participation, presentations, and written submissions.

information
Lesson Targets:
Students can explore further how pollution can be reduced or prevented or how
much pollution the student themselves creates.

Planning:
- Computer
- 3D printer if
required/available
- Video camera

PROJECTS
Students will have a choice between two projects. They will each have a
presentation (see rubric) and they will have a 500 word write up to hand in.
1. Students may look at
a. how much pollution they create themselves or
b. design a new method to reduce a specific type of pollution
Project A

Students may search for a website or formula to calculate the amount of

pollution they create themselves each day.
Calculate each week, month and year.
What is the biggest cause of pollution in their daily life?
Is this more or less pollution than the average human?
Explain ways that the student can reduce their pollution.
Create a presentation video or another multimedia.
o NO PowerPoints or Prezi presentations. Be creative.
500 word write up on how much pollution they create and how they plan
to reduce it.

Project B

Student look at methods being used to reduce/prevent pollution.

Why are they not as efficient? Why are they efficient?
Invent a new method to prevent/reduce pollution.
Create a digital model or digital sketch (use a 3D printer if available)
Present their digital model/sketch if available have them 3D print the
model
500 word write up comparing it to previous methods and explaining how
it will work and why it a better model.
