Lesson # 2

Unit B: Energy Flow in Technological System s

Program of Studies Learner Outcomes

Date: April 22nd

Topic: B1.1 Motion

Knowledge:
Explain and apply concepts used in theoretical and practical measures of energy in mechanical
systems
o describe evidence for the presence of energy; i.e., observable physical and chemical
changes, and changes in motion, shape or temperature
o explain that, in the absence of resistive forces, motion at constant speed requires no
energy input
Performing and Recording:
Conduct investigations into relationships between and among observable variables, and use a
broad range of tools and techniques to gather and record data and information
o compile and organize data, using appropriate formats and data treatments to facilitate
interpretation of the data
Analyzing and Interpreting:
Analyze data and apply mathematical and conceptual models to develop and assess possible
solutions
o compile and display evidence and information, by hand or using technology, in a variety
of formats, including diagrams, flow charts, tables, graphs and scatterplots
o identify limitations of data or measurement
o interpret patterns and trends in data, and infer or calculate linear and nonlinear
relationships among variables
Communication and Teamwork:
Work as members of a team in addressing problems, and apply the skills and conventions of
science in communicating information and ideas and in assessing results
o represent large and small numbers using appropriate scientific notation
o select and use appropriate numeric, symbolic, graphical and linguistic modes of
representation to communicate ideas, plans and results

Instructional Outcomes: Students will...

Define and describe motion and uniform motion

Define and calculate average speed
Understand, use and manipulate the formula for average speed
Focus on proper and accurate graphing skills
Plot distance vs. time and speed vs. time graphs, analyze the data, calculate slope and
understand it's meaning

Prep/supplies:

Body: (45min)

Introduce motion and uniform motion

Domino Lab Demo (notepack pg 12/ text pg 134)
ONLY FIRST GRAPH
o 65 dominos, 4cm apart
o 6 stop watches and student volunteers every 50

What is the function of a

uniform? - relate uniform to
"sameness", consistency,
Uniform motion - almost
impossible to maintain due to
forces acting on the object in
motion
equal distances in
equal amount of time
Graphing skills reminders
Define Variables
Scale even units
title, labels and units

cm
Collect data and graph as a class on board
Focus on graphing skills, explain
importance of each portion
What information does the finished
graph provide us? What type of motion
does this graph show?
Go through notes: Unit B 1.1 Motion relate back to
demo (finish
See practice question answers below

Conclusion:

Assign homework with rest of time to work.

o read student reference 7: graphing - page 472 477
o Worksheet- Graphical analysis of uniform
motion (average speed)
o read pages 126 133
o B1.1 Check and Reflect- page 135 #s 1 13

why do we calculate
slope? what info does
it supply? *units*
Average speed formula
reminders
units and conversions
NO FORMULA
TRIANGLES
Distance vs time = average
speed
Speed vs time = confirms
uniform motion

Take 5
Complete the following questions using the correct number of significant digits and scientific notation
where needed:
1)
2)
3)
4)

3.400 + 16.5846 0.005400 + 154.000003 = 173.979203 = 174.0

13.23 - 7.81 + 320 + 10.2 x 107 = 102000325.4 = 1 x 108
3.02 x 104 / 4.563 x 10-3 = 661852.7723 = 6.62 x 106
6.0142 x 10-7 x .0201 = 1.2088542 x 10-8 = 1.21 x 10-8

Example Problems
1) A huge ocean wave, or tsunami, travels a distance of 4.0 x 10 6 m in 3.6 x 104 s. Calculate the
average speed of the tsunami.
v = d/t
v = d2 d1 / t2 t1
v = (4.0 x 106 m 0m) / (3.6 x 104 s 0s)
v = 1.1 x 102 m/s
2) A Concorde airplane could fly at an average speed of 694 m/s. Calculate how long it would have
taken the Concorde to fly around the world, which is approximately 4.00 x 10 7 m.
v = d/t
694 m/s = 4.00 x 107 m / t
694 m/s (t) = 4.00 x 107 m
t = 4.00 x 107 m / 694 m/s
v = 5.76 x 104 s

(multiply by t on both sides)

(divide by 694 m/s on both sides)

3) An electric train is traveling at an average speed of 6.9 m/s for 4.0 s. Calculate the distance
traveled by the train.
v = d/t
6.9 m/s = d / 4.0 s
6.9 m/s x 4.0 s = d
28m = d

(multiply by 4.0 on both sides)
