Planning Form

Name of Activity: Count the Caterpillars


Originating Idea: Counting and sorting
Curriculum Area: Mathematics
Materials: small circles different sizes cut out of construction paper/ 1 sheet
of blank paper/ glue stick

Appropriate Age group: 3-5


Early: Begin a story by saying I wonder how many caterpillars can grow on this
paper. Have children count how many circles their caterpillar is made from.
Discuss the shape of the circle.

Middle: Give each child a set of circles and a piece of paper. Then say to the
children I wonder how long can a caterpillar grow. As the children begin to work
talk to them about the different colors and how many circles they chose to put on
their paper.

Later: Let them add a face and even antennas or legs if they choose.

End of Activity: Tell the children five more minutes: After children have
cleaned up their materials, ask them to move like caterpillars to the next
activity.

Follow-up Ideas: Add left over circles to art area. Next follow up activity use
the red circles to make a lady bug.
