Writing originated from prehistoric times when early man used crude pictures and symbols to record thoughts. The Egyptians further developed this into hieroglyphics, which consisted of three kinds of symbols - pictures representing objects, symbols representing ideas, and symbols representing sounds. This allowed for accurate long-distance communication and storage of accumulated human experience and knowledge.
