8 9 Solution)

This document presents the solution to a problem involving a simple Brayton cycle. It provides the schematic, T-s diagram, and given parameters. It then shows the calculations to find the net power and efficiency using (a) constant specific heat and (b) gas property tables. The net power was 341.53 MW with 40.6% efficiency for part (a) and 243.24 MW with 32% efficiency for part (b).

PROBLEM

PROBLEM 8-9
 Question:

A simple Brayton cycle without regeneration,

intercooling or reheat has compressor and turbine
pressure ratios of 9.286 and 8.276, polytropic
efficiencies of 0.862 and 0.904, and minimum and
maximum temperatures of 40 and 2040°F. Air enters
the compressor at the rate of 6(106) lbm/h. The
combustion gases correspond to 400 percent
theoretical air. Find the net cycle power, in
megawatts, and cycle efficiency using (a) a constant
specific heat of 0.24 Btu/lbm · °R and constant k=1.4,
and (b) the gas tables. The molecular weight of the
combustion gases=28.925. The ratio of products to
air by mass=1.0168.
