Camp Gordon Johnston and

Florida in World War II, Floating Fortress, by Nick Wynne &

Richard Moorhead

This book, published by The History Press, Charleston,

SC, 29403 (www.historypress.net), is now being sent
to bookstores; this historical publication consists of 254
researched pages and is available in paperback. The cost is $25.00
and is avalable for sale in the CGJA WWII Museum giftshop.

The authors, Nick Wynne and Richard Moorhead traveled to Carrabelle in March of 2010
to attend the CGJ Days reunion. While here they interviewed WWII veterans who served in
Florida and, specifically, Camp Gordon Johnston. Chapter eight in the book, “Hell by the
Sea,” deals extensively with the Camp, its location, the tough living conditions, the dangerous
training, the many units who passed through the Camp, as well as its impact on the local
community of Carrabelle.

The Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum provided much of the information
from its extensive research library, as well as from recorded interviews
of the veterans themselves. The Curator of the museum, Linda
Minichiello, had communicated with the two authors via
phone and email before they came in March. Much historical
information had already been exchanged when the two men
came from Orlando to talk to our veterans and make copies of
the photos the museum owns.

The book also chronicles all of Florida’s many camps,

bases and forts that were built during the war. An excellent
source of facts, stories, and remembrances from a time
of despair, triumph, and exhilaration in Florida during WWII.
The Camp Gordon Johnston Association and WWII Museum is proud
to have been a source of information for this publication.
