What is 3G Technology?
•International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-
2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a family
of standards for mobile telecommunications defined by
the International Telecommunication Union which
includes GSM,EDGE, UMTS, and CDMA2000 as well
as DECT and WiMAX.

IMT-2000 Vision Includes
LAN, WAN and Satellite Services
•GSM- Global System for Mobile communications.
In Europe most providers operates GSM in 900MHz and 1800MHz
bands.

•PDC- Personal Digital Cellular. It uses TDMA tech. & used

exclusively in Japan. It is implemented in the 800 MHz and 1.5 GHz
bands.

•PHS- Payload header suppression. PHS suppress unnecessary

packet headers on upstream and downstream traffic flows.

•Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) is a mobile

telecommunications technology, developed by Motorola, It places
more users in a given spectral space, by using speech compression
and time division multiple access (TDMA).
•EDGE - Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. It can carry a
bandwidth up to 236.8 kbit/s in packet mode.  This means it
can handle three times as much traffic as standard GPRS.

•CDMA2000 is a hybrid 2.5G / 3G technology of
mobile telecommunications standards that use CDMA to send
voice, data and signaling data. CDMA1xRTT is similar to
CDMA2000. 1RXTT stands for 1 time radio Transmission
Technology

•TD-SCDMA -Time Division Synchronous Code Division

Multiple Access. It dynamically adjusting the number of
timeslots used for downlink and uplink, the system can more
easily accommodate asymmetric traffic with different data
rate requirements on downlink and uplink than FDD schemes.
TD-SCDMA also uses TDMA in addition to the CDMA.
W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is
a wideband spread-spectrum channel access method that utilizes
the direct-sequence spread spectrum method of asynchronous code
division multiple access to achieve higher speeds and support more users
compared to most time division multiple access (TDMA) schemes used
today.
