REPORTED SPEECH PRACTICE

A.PUT THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES INTO THE REPORTED SPEECH.MAKE ANY NECESSARY
CHANGES IN VERB TENSES, PRONOUNS, TIME EXPRESSIONS AND SO ON.

1. “Mr. Mason has gone out”, the secretary told me.

2. “Shut the door, Tom”, she said.

3. “Is it a return ticket cheaper than two singles?”, asked my aunt.

4. “I don’t want to go swimming”, Andrew said

5. “Lend me your pen for a moment”, I told Mary.

6. “We are leaving on Friday”, we said.

7. “Don’t watch late night horror movies”, I warned them.

8. “We had lunch in Luigi’s restaurant”, they said.

9. “Why don’t you put an advertisement on the local paper?”, they said.

10. “Let’s leave the washing up till tomorrow”, he suggested.

11. “Who is going to leave in the big house?”, asked Peter.

12. “I will phone you later”, Sarah told Simon.

13. “Don’t believe anything you hear”, He warned me.

14. “I can’t type”, I told them.

15. “Are you English?”, they asked me.

16. “ I should have called you. I’m really sorry”, he apologized.


17. “Why don’t you take up tennis again?”, he suggested to me.

18. His secretary told me, ”Please fill this form in”.

19. “Where are you going?”, I asked her.

20. She asked, “What has the weather been like during your holidays?”

21. “Let’s go down to the harbor and see if we can hire a boat”, he said.

22. He said, “If you don’t like escalators you can go up the emergency staircase”.
I answered “Thank you, I’ll do that”.

23. They said “ If the war breaks out we will leave the country at once”

24. Mum said, “ Sit down and keep quiet unless you want to get hurt, Lisa”

25. They said, “Would you like some more wine?” and I said “Yes, please”

26. The fortune teller said to me, “Read the horoscope every day”.

27. “Where is the library?”, Ann asked.

28. The teacher said, “Please be quiet, children”.

29. She said “ The removal agency is going to bring us our furniture tomorrow morning”

30. “You must put your books under this table while you are making the exam”, the
teacher told us.
