Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) : Demo-Smaw

This document provides a welding procedure specification for shielded metal arc welding of weathering steels and Group III steels. The process uses E8018-C1 or E8018-C1 H4R filler metals, with a minimum preheat and interpass temperature of 10°C for materials under 20mm thick. Welds can be made in the flat, horizontal, vertical up, and overhead positions. Multiple weld passes are required, with the root pass being large to minimize cracking. Current ranges from 100-150 amps for a 3.2mm electrode, up to 200-270 amps for positions other than overhead and vertical.

Notes, Technique or Code’s rules: Originated by:

-Number of passes varies based on joint configuration, position, electrode size, travel speed,
and weld technique. John Smith, Welding Engineer
-First pass should be large enough to minimize the possibility of cracking.
-F=Flat, H=Horizontal, V=Vertical, OH=Overhead
-Maximum thickness of layers is 6 mm (1/4) for root pass and
5 mm (3/16) for subsequent layers.
-The groove in a joint may be reversed where more practical or necessary.
-Larger size electrodes may be used for fill and/ or cap passes of the thicker material.
-Smaller size electrodes usually applicable for root passes and/ or for thinner material. Date: 04, 29, 2005 Revision (1)
