Paint Estimates

The document discusses the composition and preparation of paints, describing different types of paints and primers as well as how to estimate the quantity of paint needed for a surface by calculating the surface area, number of coats, and coverage rate per liter provided by the manufacturer. It also provides two sample problems demonstrating how to use the estimation formula and determine the number of paint cans needed.

Estimating Paints

Composition of Paint
• Pigment – which is the coloring element. This
can be white, colored or opaque.
• Vehicle – is the oils or resins that hold the
pigment together, or in suspension.
Preparation
Before a surface is painted, it must be thoroughly
cleaned, allowed to dry or cure. It is then given:
a. Primer
b. Sealer
c. Conditioner
d. Curing agent

The preparation should be compatible or suited to the

topcoat finish desired.
Description of Paints and Companion
Products
• Oil-based Paints
• Alkyd Paints
• Emulsion Paints
• Catalyzed Coatings
• Enamel Paints
• Thinners
• Primer
Estimating Paint
(Surface Area) x (No. of Coats) /
Coverage of Paint
= Quantity of Paint Required

Where: the coverage of paint is usually given by the

manufacturer.
Sample Problem #1
Surface Area: 750sqm
Primer Coat to be used:1 coat with coverage of 30sqm / 4liters
Top Coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 40sqm / 4liters

And determine how many cans each of 16 liters and/or 4 liters

would give the equivalent quantities.

Step 1: Determine the coverage (area) per liter. = sqm/L unit

Step 2: Determine how many liters required. = L
Step 3: Determine how many cans needed. = Cans
Sample Problem #2
Surface Area: 900sqm
Primer Coat to be used:1 coat with coverage of 25sqm / 4liters
Top Coat to be used: 1 coat with coverage of 35sqm / 4liters

And determine how many cans each of 16 liters and/or 4 liters

would give the equivalent quantities.
