This study guide is for a Grade 4 math unit test on naming and constructing geometric figures. The unit covered identifying different types of polygons and their properties. Students learned to classify and name quadrilaterals. For the test, students should be able to name polygons from pictures, identify shapes as polygons, name quadrilaterals using letters, draw different geometric lines and figures, and correctly use geometric terms. The guide lists the unit's learning goals from introduced to secure, with the secure goals like naming lines and geometric shapes being most important for the assessment.

Study Guide – Grade 4, Unit 1
“Naming & Constructing Geometric Figures”
(Test Date - Wednesday, September 22, 2010)
*** Family letters with examples of math steps
learned in class are available from my blog – www.d97adarley.blogspot.com
Unit 1 had a lot of vocabulary, more than any other
unit. Students have a vocabulary chart in their math spirals with the most commonly used words in this unit. Other vocabulary included all of the words for polygons – quadrangle, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon. In addition, students have a classification chart in their spirals to help sort quadrangles/quadrilaterals.
For this assessment, students should be able to:
• write the name of the kind of polygon in a picture when
shown only part of it. • identify which shapes in a set are polygons and tell why. • name a quadrilateral using letter points. • draw lines, line segments, and rays, parallel lines, and intersecting lines • correctly name lines, line segments, rays using letters, and give specific names for quadrangles • sketch different geometric figures using a template
The Unit 1 learning goals below list whether a concept is
introduced (beginning), introduced once before (developing) or closer to mastery due to repeated exposure (secure). The secure goals of a unit are those used most for grades on math assessment.
1. Use a compass & straightedge to construct geometric figures
