Trigonometric Equation 2
Trigonometric Equation 2
equation
• equation involving compound – and double-angle formulae
Solution:
a) Sin θ = 2 sin (6000 – θ)
Sin θ = 2 (sin 6000 cos θ – cos 6000 sin θ)
Sin θ = 2( cos θ – sin θ )
Sin θ = cos θ – sin θ
2 sin θ = cos θ
tan θ =
θ = 4000 54’ , 22000 54’
3 cos 2 θ + cos θ = 2
b) 3(2 cos2 θ – 1 ) + cos θ = 2
6 cos2 θ + cos θ -5 = 0
(6 cos θ – 5)cos θ + 1 ) = 0
5
cos θ = 6
θ = 330033’ , 3260027’
Or cos θ = -1
θ = 18000
θ = 330033’ , 18000 , 3260027’
solve the following equations for 00 < θ ≤ 1800
a) cos θ+cos 2 θ +cos 3 θ = 0
b) 3(sin θ+sin 3 θ) = 4 sin 2 θ
Solution
a) Cos θ + cos 2 θ + cos 3 θ = 0 b) 3(sin θ + sin 3 θ) = 4 sin 2 θ
solution
Refer to figure on right. Two sides of the right- angled
triangle have lengths 3 and 4, the coefficients of cos x
and sin x respectively in f(x), the hypotenuse then has
length 5.
5
f(x) = 3 3cos x + 4 4sin x 3
5 5
= 5 ( cos x + sin x )
4
= 5 (cos α cos θ + sin α sin θ)
= 5 cos (x - α)
Since -1≤ cos (x - α) ≤ 1, then -5 ≤ 5 cos (x - α) ≤ 5, i.e. -5 ≤ f(x) ≤ 5.
We see that the maximum and minimum values of f(x) are
f(α) = 5 and f (1800 + α) = -5 respectively.
