This document evaluates several educational websites for teaching English to children, including FunBrain, Sesame Street, Between the Lions, LanguageGuide.org, and Kindersay. Each site is summarized in terms of its goals, presentation of content, appropriateness for students, opportunities for practice and evaluation, and additional notes. While the sites provide vocabulary and pronunciation lessons, some are found to be lacking in opportunities for students to practice and receive feedback on their learning.

 Goals: helps students to practice important skills such as writing, Reading,


and listening. Additionally, kids can practice math activities, watch movies
and play many games designed for ESL young students.
 Presentation: this web page include a vast number of different activities

such as: puzzles, web books, comics, marching exercises, grammar


exercises, and so on, that allow students to practice English .
 Appropriateness: this site was design for kids. Every activity provides
students instructions about how to use them. This page guides students,
so they do not need any instruction to manage it.
 Outcomes: online exercises to practice.
 Evaluation: most of the practice games in this page provide students
instant feedback which has correct or incorrect and the appropriate word.
 Notes: All the activities are really simple and suitable for young students.

Sesame Street

 Goals: to help students to learn new vocabulary, practice listening and


writing skills and improve their reading.
 Presentation: using the sesame street characters, this page offers
different activities and exercises where students can use their
imagination. Elmo, Cookie Monster, and other characters, help kids enjoy
learning.
 Appropriateness: this web page was design for pedagogical aspects.
Students are able to understand the activities because they are really clear
and easy to be understood.
 Outcomes: there is a section in this page, where students can write a
letter, decorate it, and send it via email to one of their friends.
 Evaluation: many exercises in this site follow the Presentation, Practice
and Production method. Students are able to meet the vocabulary, and
then use it in different exercises.
 Notes: this page is based on the Sesame Street web page. However, it was

designed by the University of Houston to provide kids a place to learn in a


really fun way.
Between the Lions

 Goals: offers tons of expert-approved games, stories, video clips, and
activities—all aimed at reinforcing the literacy mission of the series.
 Presentation: This page contains mainly games which focus on a variety of

educational areas. These activities are appropriate for elementary school


students.
 Appropriateness: Students do not need initial instructions because the
web site is really simple to manage. Navigation is very clear and the
characters of the show (between the lions) help kids to explore the site.
 Outcomes: scores in some of the activities.
 Evaluation: Even though the activities in this web page are really good for
kids, they do not offer enough feedback.
 Notes: This page is totally educational; I personally enjoy the reading
which I consider excellent to help students develop reading skills.

LanguageGuide. Org

 Goals: Guide to pronouncing various vocabulary words in English.
 Presentation: This page contains topics about different vocabulary
categorized by sections.
 Appropriateness: navigation is really easy, the vocabulary is simple.
 Evaluation: This web page offers the pronunciation of different
vocabulary. However, students do not have the opportunity to practice
the words just learned.
 Notes: I consider that although this web page is really useful and teachers
might use it as a tool for pronunciation, it cannot be consider a complete
web site because I do not have any activities or practices which are really
important for students.

Kindersay
 Goals: to help preschool kids & English as Second Language (ESL) children

 Presentation: it includes categories; each one has words related to that
specific category. The vocabulary is presented in a Word Show format.
 Appropriateness: since this web page is designed for kinder garden
students, the navigation requires the help of parents or teachers.
Students might need initial instructions to understand how the site works.
 Evaluation: this web site is really good for kinder garden students.
However, I do not offer any practice. As a result no feedback is presented.
 Notes: The word show format in this web site really calls the attention of
kids. The site is very colorful and they learn how to pronounce words in a
right way.
