Problem42 41

This document calculates the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation emitted during electron transitions in sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium-37 chloride (Na37Cl). For NaCl, the calculated wavelengths are 1.148 cm for a transition from l=2 to l=1, and 2.297 cm for a transition from l=1 to l=0. The same calculations for Na37Cl yield wavelengths of 1.173 cm and 2.347 cm for the same transitions. The differences in wavelengths between the two isotopes are 0.025 cm and 0.050 cm.

b) Carrying out exactly the same calculation for Na 37 Cl, where mr (37)  2.354 
10 26 kg and I(37)  1.312  10 45 kg  m 2 we find for
l  2  l  1: E  1.693  10 23 J and λ  1.173 cm. For
l 1 l  0: E  8.465  10  24 J and λ  2.347 cm.
So the differences in wavelength are:
l  2  l  1: λ  1.173 cm  1.148 cm  0.025 cm.
l 1 l  0: λ  2.347 cm  2.297 cm  0.050 cm.
