SUBTRACT a POSITIVE means SUBTRACT - +3 = - 3

SUBTRACT a NEGATIVE means ADD - -3 = + 3

Sometimes Textbooks give a number in a bracket

5 - ( 2)
+
=5- 2 +

Sometimes Textbooks give the sign NOT raised

5 - (+2) = 5 - (+2) = 5 - +2

Using negative numbers in
formulae
• We call putting a number into an
expression Substitution
Examples t=f+7

If t = f + 7

If f = 5 t=5+7 t = 12
If f = -5 t = -5 + 7 t=2
Examples t = 3q + 4
3q = 3 x q
If t = 3q + 4

If q = 5 t = 3x5 + 4 t = 15 + 4 t = 19
If q = -5 t = 3x-5 + 4 t = -15 + 4 t = -11

NOT t = 35 + 4 = 39
Examples S = t2
t2 = t x t

If t = 5 S = 5x5 S = 25
If t = -5 S = -5x-5 S = 25
