Emoticons (TOK Presentation)

Emoticons are representations of facial expressions created using keyboard characters to convey emotional context in electronic messages. Common emoticons include :-) for a smile, :D for a big grin, and :( for a frown. While originally text-based, emoticons are now often automatically replaced with small corresponding images, known as graphical emoticons. Emoticons support the "image theory" of meaning, where meaningful words come from mental images. However, some questions have been raised about whether the use of emoticons promotes superficial expressions of human emotion in brief, simplified images.
