Speed Control of Universal Motor of Three Phase Angle Using Triac

This project aims to control the speed of a three-phase motor using a triac. A triac allows control of current flow during both alternations of AC power. By varying the firing angle of the triac, the speed of the three-phase motor can be adjusted. The document describes how induction motors are commonly used for variable speed applications and electronics provide improved control compared to mechanical gears.

Speed Control of Universal Motor of

Three Phase Angle Using

Triac
Aim:

The main objective of the project is to control the speed of the three

phase motor using Triac.

Description:

Induction motors are the most widely used motors for appliances,

industrial control, and automation; hence, they are often called the

workhorse of the motion industry. They are robust, reliable, and durable.

When power is supplied to an induction motor at the recommended

specifications, it runs at its rated speed. However, many applications need

variable speed operations. For example, a washing machine may use

different speeds for each wash cycle. Historically, mechanical gear systems
were used to obtain variable speed. Recently, electronic power and control

systems have matured to allow these components to be used for motor

control in place of mechanical gears. These electronics not only control the

motor’s speed, but can improve the motor’s dynamic and steady state

characteristics. In addition, electronics can reduce the system’s average

power consumption and noise generation of the motor.

In this project we will control the speed of the three phases motor.

Depending on the phase angle of the AC the motor speed is controlled.

WHAT IS MEANT BY TRIAC

TRIAC

The TRIAC is a three-terminal device similar in construction

and operation to the SCR. The TRIAC controls and conducts
current flow during both alternations.

Mostly SCRs are used for controlling higher voltageoperation of

devices and by changing the firing angle the output of the SCR can
easily be controlled

APPLICATIONS OF UNIVERSAL MOTOR:

• Universal motors may be used with an AC or DC

supply current.
• Operating at normal power line frequencies, the
maximum output of universal motors is limited and
motors exceeding one kilowatt are rare.
• The advantages of universal motors are specifically
high starting torque, very compact design and high
running speeds.
• Continuous speed control of a universal motor
running on DC is very easily accomplished using a
thyristor circuit.
• As a result such motors are usually used in DC
applications such as food mixers and power tools which
do not require continuous-mode operation.

DRAWBACKS:

• The drawback is the maintenance costs are very high .

and short life caused by the commutator.
