Action Verbs

A verb is a doing word.


Most verbs describe actions and are called action
verbs. They tell you what people or things are doing.
Action verbs express an action we can see.
Action or Doing verbs are words that express a
concrete action. They are common in spoken language
and in the writing of young children.
Eg : work, run, sit, eat, jump, etc.
Story Time
Read the story. Put the correct verbs in the spaces.
Brushed washed ate put jumped said
went watch

After he _____ his dinner, Billy went to the bathroom


and _____ his hands and _____ his teeth. He then
_____ on his pyjamas and _____ into the loungeroom
to ______ television. When it was eight o’clock he
______ goodnight to his mother and then ______ into
his bed.
Saying Verbs
Saying verbs express a spoken action.
Eg : talk, tell, said, suggested, yelled.

Add a saying verb to complete each sentence.


tell quack screamed said talk yelled

a. The ducks began to ____ when the dog came near.


b. The boy ____ across the playground to his friend.
c. The teacher is going to _____ us a story.
d. Ian ____ that he did not do it.
e. I will ____ to you on the phone tonight.
f. The children _____ when they saw the scary monster mask.
Thinking and Feeling Verbs
Thinking verbs express actions that happen mentally,
such as feelings, ideas, thoughts or attitudes.
These verbs do not express a concrete action.
Thinking and feeling verbs are common in arguments,
narratives and descriptions.
Eg : I like Sam.
I think people should recycle.
Katy believed the story.
I understand.
Exercise Time
Add a thinking verb to complete each sentence.

Recap
The verb is the heart of a sentence.
It brings the people and things to life.
Sometimes a verb may be made up of two or more
than two words.
Eg : a. Siana is reading a book.
The verb is – is reading. It is made up of two words –
is and reading.
b. The stars are shining in the sky.
The verb is – are shining. It is made up of two words
are and shining.
