WHAT IS UID?
 UID is a biometric identification that will
also include an image of the face of a
person.
 Unique Identification Number (UID) is a

recently finalized initiative by the


Government of India to create and manage
a centralized identification system for all
the adult citizens and residents of India,
which can be utilized for a variety of
identification purposes
 Nandan Nilekani former co-chairman of Infosys has
been appointed as the head of
Unique Identification Authority of India.

 The project has been given a new name and logo


by UIAI-”Aadhaar”

 The ID system is likely to be a large alpha-numeric


string in order to accommodate the count of
billion-plus citizens of India and ones that will be
born in future

 The card is likely to have a 16kb or 64kb storage


chip embedded
 The UID Authority of India will issue the first
UIDs linked to a person's demographic and
biometric information between August and
February
 issue about 600 million such IDs over the

next five years to help verify citizens quickly


and cheaply
Purpose Of UID
 The ID is fundamentally being prepared to
identify Indian citizens so that better security
can be provided by identifying illegal
immigrants and terrorists
 ability to provide ease of identity establishment
to Indian citizens when accessing a variety of
governmental and private-sector services.
 The UID will enable better targeting,
identification of beneficiaries, and plug
leakages.
BENEFITS OF UID
 Subsidies on food, energy, education, etc to
people who are entitled to receive them.
 Opening bank accounts
 Getting new telephone, mobile or internet
connections
 New light or gas connections
 Getting a passport
 The same card may act as a driving license and
store your traffic violation records
 It may act as your electoral card
 Family genealogy may be traced
 It will help in saving companies and government
agencies the expensive and time-consuming
process of verifying and establishing identities.

 The project, which has drawn the interest of


mobile services firms and technology giants
including Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft
and Google, is expected to better target and
reduce waste in India's multi-billion dollar
welfare schemes, including pensions
