a letter to our

Community

To My Fellow United Way Supporters,

As you know, our region faces major challenges.

We have the highest unemployment rate in 27 years.
Fifty-one percent of students entering Chicago high
schools do not graduate. Fifty-six percent of premature
deaths in Illinois are from chronic diseases that are
preventable.
Statistics such as these do not improve without a massive,
coordinated effort. Making an impact takes much more
than any person or organization can do alone.
That is the advantage of United Way. It can accomplish
what individuals and organizations, working separately,
cannot. It recruits people with the passion, expertise and
resources to produce significant results. It brings together
leaders from government, corporations, human services
and the community to develop workable answers to
systemic problems. And United Way tracks and measures
funded programs and activities, to make sure it’s making
the best use of resources.
After the government, United Way is the largest funder of
health and human services. And it is doing essential work
in the areas of income, education and health, which are
the foundation of stable families and communities.
To encourage more giving to meet our community’s
greater need, I am proud to announce the Harris Bank and
BMO Capital Markets Challenge Grant. It will match, dollar
for dollar, new and increased Tocqueville ($10,000+) and
Leadership ($1,000+) gifts this campaign year.
I have pledged to give 110 percent to my partnership with
United Way. I hope you will, too, by increasing your
donation or contributing for the first time, and bolstering
your company’s partnership through larger gifts or new
sponsorships.
Together, you and I can change the statistics. By Giving,
Advocating and Volunteering with United Way, we can
help achieve our vision of a Metropolitan Chicago where
families are stable, children succeed and people stay
healthy.
Please join me in contributing to this vital organization
and showing what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Thank you,

Ellen Costello
