A World Without It

Information technology (IT) involves using computers and telecommunications to store, retrieve, and transmit information. IT aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in problem solving through technological systems. It represents how computer hardware, software, networks, and other technologies are designed, created, and maintained. Today, IT plays an integral role across many aspects of life and has transformed how we communicate, work, learn, and interact on a global scale. While IT has created many benefits like lower costs, increased productivity and new job opportunities, it has also led to issues like unemployment, lack of privacy, and diminished job security for some positions.

Importance of Information Technology

Information technology

”The branch of engineering that deals with the use of computers and
telecommunications to retrieve and store and transmit information”.

Information technology is concerned with improvements in a variety of human and

organizational problem-solving activities through the design, development, and
use of technologically based systems and processes that enhance the efficiency
and effectiveness of information in a variety of strategic, calculated, and
operational situations. Ideally, this is accomplished through critical attention to the
information needs of humans in problem-solving tasks and in the provision of
technological aids, including electronic communication and computer-based
systems of hardware and software and associated processes.

Basically, information technology (commonly referred to as "IT" within technical

industries and the business world) is a term used to describe the design, creation,
and maintenance of complex computer and networked computer systems. Many
businesses and professionals use the term to also encompass the wide range of
technology that surrounds the computer systems themselves too.

For example, computer information technology is often used to describe:

 Computer hardware
 Computer servers
 Computer networks and networking equipment
 Computer monitors

 Software and operating systems
 Printers
 Copy machines
 Fax machines
 Office phone systems
 Internet systems
 Cell phones
 Many additional types of technology and data management equipment

IT also represents the how all of these systems are used and how they inter-relate
to one another at the same time.

In the Workplace: The IT Department

While it is not necessarily a rule, more often than not these days, and a business's
IT department will typically manage all of the office's technology needs, including
everything from the procurement of computer and technology equipment to the
installation and ongoing maintenance of the systems. In the modern data centered
workplace environment we've come to expect today, ensuring the computer
information technology backbone is operating effectively and efficiently has
become absolutely mandatory to running a successful business or workplace
operation.

Role of information technology in the world

Our world today has changed a great deal with the aid of information technology.
Things that were once done manually or by hand have now become computerized
operating systems, which simply require a single click of a mouse to get a task
completed. With the aid of IT we are not only able to stream line our business
processes but we are also able to get constant information in 'real time' that is up
to the minute and up to date.
The significance of IT can be seen from the fact that it has go through almost every
aspect of our daily lives from business to vacation and even society. Today
personal PCs, cell phones, fax machines, pagers, email and internet have all not
only become an integral part of our very culture but also play an essential role in
our day to day activities. With such a wide scope for the purpose of this article we
shall focus on the impact of the internet in information technology.

If the IT is not in the world we had to use maps to find out how to get from one
place to another, and a little math to calculate distances. We didn't have
computers in our cars to tell us to turn right and turn left: we actually had to
follow written directions or get out of our car and ask someone. IT makes the
communication methods easier by introducing new ways of communicating i.e.
cell phones, via emails, instant messenger, VoIP, video conference, and other
communicating websites like facebook and orkut e.t.c. If these services would not
be in life, the life becomes harder to do works. If we don’t have these type of
facilities of communications so we are just sending letter via post which is time
consuming ,costly, and unsecure. The interaction between masses decreases.

 We couldn't order food (fast or otherwise) or anything else without picking
up a phone or going out to the restaurant, grocery store.

 We spent a lot more time with other people face to face.

 We learned more and learned it better because we had to work for it.

 We had to play our games with other people face to face.

Advantages of information technology include:

Communication
With the help of information technology, communication has also become
cheaper, quicker, and more efficient. We can now communicate with anyone
around the globe by simply text messaging them or sending them an email for an
almost instantaneous response. The internet has also opened up face to face
direct communication from different parts of the world thanks to the helps of
video conferencing.
Cost effectiveness
Information technology has helped to computerize the business process thus
streamlining businesses to make them extremely cost effective money making
machines. This in turn increases productivity which ultimately gives rise to profits
that means better pay and less strenuous working conditions.
More time
IT has made it possible for businesses to be open 24 x7 all over the globe. This
means that a business can be open anytime anywhere, making purchases from

different countries easier and more convenient. It also means that you can have
your goods delivered right to your doorstep with having to move a single muscle.
Creation of new jobs
Probably the best advantage of information technology is the creation of new and
interesting jobs. Computer programmers, Systems analyzers, Hardware and
Software developers and Web designers are just some of the many new
employment opportunities created with the help of IT.

Disadvantages of information technology include:

Unemployment

While information technology may have updated the business process it has also
created job redundancies, downsizing and outsourcing. This means that a lot of
lower and middle level jobs have been done away with causing more people to
become unemployed.
Privacy

Though information technology may have made communication quicker, easier

and more convenient, it has also bought along privacy issues. From cell phone
signal interceptions to email hacking, people are now worried about their once
private information becoming public knowledge.
Lack of job security

Industry experts believe that the internet has made job security a big issue as since
technology keeps on changing with each day. This means that one has to be in a
constant learning mode, if he or she wishes for their job to be secure.
