Legacy in Washington
• Legacy has awarded $4,285,729.89 in grants to projects in Washington.

• Current Governor and former Attorney General Christine Gregoire was the founding board
Chair of the Legacy Board of Directors.

Tobacco Usage

• In FY09 Washington spent $17.2 million on tobacco prevention, which is 25.5% of the CDC
Annual Spending Target.1

• The CDC estimates that 52.0% of adult smokers in Washington tried to quit smoking in
2008.2

• Washington received $569 million in tobacco settlement payments and taxes in FY09.3

• Washington has securitized all or parts of its Master Settlement Agreement dollars.4

State Tobacco Laws9

Excise Tax: There is a tax of $2.025 per pack on cigarettes.

Clean Indoor Air Ordinances


• Smoking is prohibited in all child care centers, government buildings, health facilities,
restaurants, bars, schools and private workplaces.

Youth Access Laws


• The minimum age requirement for the purchase of tobacco products is 18, and penalties
exist for both minors and merchants who violate this law.

• Establishments are required to post signs stating that sales to minors are prohibited.
