GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CERTIFICATE IN ADVANCED ENGLISH (CAE)


CAE is a general proficiency examination at Level C1 in the Council of Europe Common European Framework. It is at Level 2 in the UK National
Qualifications Framework.
Council of Europe Level Examination
Research has shown that typical candidates at Level C1 can:
C2 CPE - contribute effectively to meetings within own area of work or keep up a casual
C1 CAE conversation with a good degree of fluency, coping with abstract expressions.
B2 FCE - read quickly enough to cope with an academic course, read the media for
B1 PET information or understand non-standard correspondence.
A2 KET - prepare professional correspondence, take reasonably accurate notes in meetings
or write an essay which shows an ability to communicate.
INTERPRETATION OF OVERALL GRADES
The percentage of marks needed to achieve each grade may vary from session to session depending on the precise difficulty of the individual
papers which make up the particular examination. The approximate ranges of percentages for each grade at CAE are typically as follows:

Passing Grade A 80% and above Absent candidates:


Grades Grade B 75% to 79% Grade X indicates that the candidate was absent from part of the examination.
Grade C 60% to 74% Grade Z indicates that the candidate was absent from all parts of the examination.
PENDING indicates that a result cannot be issued at present, but will follow in due course.
Failing Grade D 55% to 59%
Grades Grade E 54% and below

Grades A-E do not correspond to the shaded bands on the candidate profile above.
There are NO pass/fail levels in individual papers. The overall grade is assigned by adding together scores in individual papers.
