1. The rate of reaction for two reactions is calculated: 25.0 dm3 of oxygen collected in 2 minutes has a rate of 12.5 dm3/min, and 1.5 g of zinc reacted in 1.5 minutes has a rate of 1.0 g/min. 2. The average rate of reaction is the rate over a period of time, while the instantaneous rate is the actual rate at a single point in time. 3. Based on a graph of a magnesium-hydrochloric acid reaction: half the acid reacted at 1.5 minutes, the average rate from 3-5 minutes was 10 cm3/min, and the instantaneous rate at 3 minutes can be

Effective Practice (A) Page 8

1. Calculate the rate of reaction for the following reactions.

(a) 25.0 dm3 of oxygen gas is collected in 2 minutes.
25 .0 dm 3
Rate of reaction =
2 min

= 12.5 dm3min-1

(b) 1.5 g of zink reacted completely in 1.5 minutes

1.5 g
Rare of reaction =
1.5 min

= 1.0gmin-1

2. What is the difference between the average rate of reaction and the rate of reaction at
a given time?
Average rate of reaction is the value of the rate of reaction within a specified period
time where as reaction at a given time is the actual rate at that instant.

3. Figure 1.5 (see text book) shows the graph obtained by a student in an experiment
involving the reaction of excess magnesium powder with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Based on figure 1.5, answer the following questions
(a) When does the reaction stop?
6.5 minute

(b) When is half of total amount of hydrochloric acid reacted?

1.5 minute
(c) Determine the average rate of reaction
(i) Between 3 to 5 minutes.
(104 −84 )cm 3
Averge rate of reaction between 3 to 5 minute =
(5 −3) min

20 cm 3
=
2 min

= 10cm3min-1
(i) In the second minute.
(d) What is the instantaneous rate of reaction at 3 minutes?
(e) Sketch the graph of
(i) Mass of magnesium against time.
