The document provides the solution to a gear drive problem with the following key details: 1) Gear A has 26 teeth and revolves at 126 rev/min. Gear B has 62 teeth. 2) Gear B revolves at 53.239 rev/min based on the gear ratio of 30:71. 3) The center distance between the gears is 126.25mm, calculated as the sum of the pitch circle diameters divided by 2.

Question

A gear drive comprising two gears A and B is to have a ratio of 30:71. Gear A is
the pinion gear and has 26 teeth, revolves at 126 rev/min and is smaller of the
two gears. Assuming both gears have a module of 2.5mm (DP thus equal to
1/2.5=0.4), determine:

a) The manufacturing particulars of each gear.

b) The speed of gear B.
c) The distance between the centres of the gears.

Solution

a) Manufacturing particulars are determined as shown in. Table 1

Table 1
(b) The speed of gear wheels is inversely proportional to the number of teeth.
Therefore:

number of teeth on gear A speed of gear B

=
number of teeth on gear B speed of gear A

30 speed of gear B
=
71 126

30
Speed of gear B = 71 ∗126

= 53.239 rev/min
30
Gear ratio = 81

75+177.5
(c) Centre distance of mating gears = 2
= 126.25mm

Gear A
Root circle diameter = PCD – (2* dedendum)
=75 – (2*3.125)

=68.75mm

Base circle diameter = PCD * cos 20o

=75* cos 20o= 70.477mm

Gear B

Root circle diameter = PCD – (2 * dedendum)

=177.5 – (2* 3.125) = 171.25mm

Base circle diameter = PCD * cos 20o

=177.5 * cos 20o = 166.795mm
