Tobacco Usage

• In FY2010 Alabama spent approximately $2.1 million on tobacco prevention, which is 3.7%
of the CDC Annual Spending Target.1

• The CDC estimates 52% of adult smokers in Alabama tried to quit smoking in 2008.2

• Alabama received $247 million in tobacco settlement payments and taxes in FY2010.3

• Alabama has not securitized any of its Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) dollars.4

State Tobacco Laws9

Excise Tax: There is a tax of $0.425 per pack on cigarettes. Chewing tobacco is taxed at $0.015
per ounce. All other tobacco products have varying taxes based on weight.

Clean Indoor Air Ordinances


• Smoking restrictions are required in all child care centers, government buildings, health
facilities, schools and private workplaces.

Youth Access Laws


• The minimum age requirement for the purchase of tobacco products is 18, and penalties
exist for both minors and merchants who violate this law.
