Earth Loop Impedance Calculations

The document calculates earth loop impedance values at different points in a factory distribution system. It provides impedance calculations for: - The transformer, which has an impedance of 2.12mΩ + j11.61mΩ. - Feeder cables, which have a total impedance of 2.973 mΩ+2.373 mΩ. - The first distribution level, which has a total impedance of 45.233 mΩ+ j29.013 mΩ at Point A. - The motor, which has a total earth loop impedance of 0.889133 Ω @ 2.57 degrees. - The socket,

Earth loop impedance calculations

In this assignment we are attempting to calculate earth loop impedance values of a

distribution system of a factory the diagram of which is shown below. We were asked to
calculate the values of earth loop impedance at the motor, socket and sub-distribution board
in order to this we must add the values of impedance from other parts of the circuit also and
other calculations must also be undertaking which can be seen below also. For the purpose of
our calculations the value of circuit breakers and bus-bars are negligible.

Transformer impedance:
1-Oct-2010 Brendan Stack Page 1
For the transformer from the information I acquired from the diagram the values of resistance
and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows: R = 2.12mΩ and X =11.61mΩ.

Please note for the sake of calculations we are using complex notation thus impedance for the
transformer is 2.12mΩ + j11.61mΩ

Feeder cables impedance:

For the feeder cables from the information I acquired from the diagram the values of
resistance and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows:

R = 0.446mΩ and X = 0.356mΩ thus for a 20 metre run in length we get

20 ( 0.446 m Ω+ j 0.356 mΩ ) =8.92 mΩ+ j 7.12 mΩ

As there are three conductors in each phase we must apply the following formula

1 1 1 1
= + + =(2.973 mΩ+2.373 m Ω)
ZT ( 8.92 m Ω+ j 7.12m Ω ) ( 8.92 m Ω+ j7.12 m Ω ) ( 8.92 mΩ+ j7.12 mΩ )

1st level distribution impedance:

For the 1st level distribution from the information I acquired from the diagram the values of
resistance and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows:

R = 0.446mΩ and X = 0.167mΩ thus for a 90 metre run in length we get

90 ( 0.446 m Ω+ j 0.167 m Ω )=41.4 mΩ+ j15.034 m Ω

For ease of future calculation I shall now add the three series impedances together to give us
the value of resistance at point A which is shown in our diagram above.

( 2.12 mΩ+ j11.61 m Ω ) + ( 8.92 mΩ+ j7.12 m Ω ) + ( 2.973 m Ω+2.373 mΩ ) =45.233 mΩ+ j29.013 mΩ

(a) Earth loop impedance at the motor
For the impedance at the motor from the information I acquired from the diagram the values
of resistance and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows:

R = 16.86mΩ and X = 0.22mΩ thus for a 50 metre run in length we get

50 ( 16.86 m Ω+ j0.22 m Ω )=843 m Ω+ j 0.011 m Ω

We shall now add the impedances from our earlier calculations to get a total value therefore
total earth loop impedance at the socket is equal to.

Z=( 45.233 mΩ+ j29.013 mΩ )+ ( 843 mΩ+ j0.011 m Ω )

Z = 888.233mΩ + j40.013mΩ or 0.889133 Ω @ 2.57 degrees

(b) Earth loop impedance at the socket

For the impedance at the socket from the information I acquired from the diagram the values
of resistance and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows:

R = 27.53mΩ and X = 0.23mΩ thus for a 60 metre run in length we get

60 ( 27.53 m Ω+ j0.23 m Ω )=1.6518 Ω+ j0.0138 Ω

We shall now add the impedances from our earlier calculations to get a total value therefore
total earth loop impedance at the socket is equal to.

Z=( 45.233 mΩ+ j29.013 mΩ )+ (1.6518 Ω+ j 0.0138 Ω )

Z = 1.697033Ω + j0.042813Ω or 1.69757 Ω @ 1.445 degrees

(c) Earth loop impedance at the sub-distribution board

1-Oct-2010 Brendan Stack Page 3

For the impedance at the sub-distribution board from the information I acquired from the
diagram the values of resistance and reactance which were got from our tables are as follows:

R = 2.135mΩ and X = 0.182mΩ thus for a 35 metre run in length we get

35 ( 2.135 mΩ+ j0.182 m Ω )=74.725 m Ω+ j6.37 mΩ

We shall now add the impedances from our earlier calculations to get a total value therefore
total earth loop impedance at the socket is equal to.

Z=( 45.233 mΩ+ j29.013 mΩ )+ (74.725 mΩ+ j 6.37 mΩ )

Z = 119.958mΩ + j0.035383Ω or 1.2506Ω @ 16.434 degrees
