Reinforced concrete Design
General Requirements
Step one :
The Direc on of Ri bs and Loadi ng is Chos en .
Step Two ;
Over all slab thickness must be chosen .
Maximum value of thickness to stand against the deflec on i s used f rom t he t abl e ( 3-2) of
dr. Samir Shihada Reinforcement Design Book .
From this table you can reach the worst case by measuring thru ribs and spans and
determine which kind of these in the table sa sfy ever y one and by that you can obt ai n the
minimum thickness which sa sfy the deflec on r equi r em ent s :
A er I do the pr evi ous step I can deci de that the wo r st case is :
L= 445 cm and it is one end con nuous ri b so far …
The minimum thickness = 445/18.5 = 24.05 cm
· take the minimum thickness = 25 cm
· it will be divide as 17 cm the thickness of the block and 8 cm concrete .
Step three :
Find the topping slap minimum thickness :
ACI Requirements want the minimum thickness of the slab should not be less than the
following :
. t = √(3Mu)/(f b fc'0.5)
this value always in the project such as this one … t was not more than
3-4 cm and to prove this take the worst case in findi ng M
u the Si m
p l y suppor ted beam
Mu = ωl2/8 = 1.362* .16/12 = 0.01816
So …
. t = 2.0689 cm
and if you note that it is less than the 8 cm I leave it to be topping slab
Step five : De t er mi ni ng the De ad Load and Li ve Load to load the beams in anal ysi s oper a on
:
take a member (block and half of the two ribs beside) then find the load :
Total volume = 1× 1.04 × 0.25 = 0.26 m3
Volume of blocks = 8 × 0.4 × 0.25 × 0.017 = 0.136 m3.
Volume of concrete = 0.26 – 0.136 = 0.124 m3
Total weight = 8 × 17 + 0.124 × 2500 = 446 kg/1.04 m2
Total weight = 429 kg/m2
Weight of covering material = 225 kg /m2
Total weight = 225+429 = 655 kg/m2.
Total weight = 0.655 ton/m2
This load is taken in mind when findi ng the we i ght of panel and wh en you wa nt to find
weight of walls you follow the following steps :
Example :
Find the weight of a 20 cm thickness wall .
Solu on :
If you know that …
The 1 m2 contain 12.5 block .
The weight of 20 cm block = 20 kg .
Weight of blocks = 12.5 × 20 = 0.25 ton /m2
Weight of plaster = 12.5 × 20 = 0.06 ton/m2
Total weight = 250+60 = 0.31 ton/m2
Weight of 3-m height wall = 3× 0.31 = 0.93 ton/mr
Weight of 5-m height wall = 1.55 ton /mr
From the previous informa on you can take the fol lowi ng res ul ts :
· Dead load of one way ribbed slab = 0.655 ton/m2
· Live load of residen al us es is = 0. 2 ton/ m 2
· Dead load of 20 cm thickness wall = 0.93 ton/mr
Design Of Ribs
Step six : Take a samples of Ribs , analysis and then Design for Shear and Flexure :
RIB (1)
RIB (2)
1) Design of RIB 2 for shear :
As the previous rib 1 use the same procedure and u will find the fol lowi ng :
Use 4 f 6 mm @1m
2) Design of RIB 2 for flexur e :
Let a < 5 cm so …
C= 0.85(b)(a)(fc')
C = 0.85(200)(52)(a)
C= 8.849 a ton .
Mu = f Mn = f C (d-(a/2))
Mu= 1.39
So … a2 – 43.61 a + 34.924 = 0
So a = 0.816 cm < 5cm
Assump on is good .
ÞC=T
As = T/fy = 1.717
Use 2 f 12mm
You Can See all reinforcement steel shown in the Maps Sec on of the Pr oj ect .
Design Main Beams

a) Main Reinforcement :
So… d= 19.5
ρ +ve 0.005934 ρ min 0.0033 use ρ = 0.005934
Spacing Check
Using
no. of bars = 5 so .. space (S)…= 10.45 cm
§ Example of nega ve mo me nt :
( Mmax) –ve = 8.03 ton.m
So… d= 19.5
ρ -ve 0.010713 ρ min 0.0033 use ρ = 0.010713
Spacing Check
Using
When using bars = 9 so .. space (S)…= 4.525 cm
M No. of bars
+ 4.74 5 f 14mm
-8.03 9 f 14mm
+5.64 9 f 14mm
b) S rrups :
Establish ZONES
(√f'c)(b)(d) 16.54629868
Vs -2.94247947
if Vs < (fc')(b)(d) so take d
if Vs > (fc')(b)(d) so take d/2
so use Φ 8mm @ 15 cm
And here you are the results of the s rrups of thi s beam :
At supports 1Φ 8mm @ 15 cm
At the middle of the span 1Φ 8mm @ 15 cm
Design of Columns
To find Pu the Comp r es si on for ce in any col umn you m
u s t fol low the next two m
e t hods :
1) Area Method .
2) Rec on M e t hod .
And take the biggest of them and design on it .
Now with examples you will understand how we can do this .
Now use these tow values to find the tot al we i ght on ever y col umn by m
u l ply i t of the area
that the column have from the slab
And you will find the fol lowi ng tabl e .
But before it I want to explain How can I have the Pu from the reac on M e t hod
2) Reac on M e t hod :
From the CBM program when you take the informa on for each poi nt you ought to obt ai n
the reac on at each suppor t to us e it her e .
Not that the reac on is a Factor ed Ser vi ce Load that you can us e it in the des i gn of the beam
with all of easiness , but when you want to design the foo ng and the load in the col umn
came from the reac on m e t hod you wa nt the Ser vi ce load to cal cul at e the ar ea of the
foo ng .
Here you must return to the CBM program and use it in findi ng the reac on by ent eri ng t he
final load onl y ( summa on of the dead l oad and t he l ive l oad ) wit hout any f act ora on and
find the reac on .
At that moment you have the service load to find the ar ea of the foo ngs and t he f act ored
load to complete the design process of the columns and the foo ng.
