Atom, Compound, Mixtures and Types2011

All matter is made of atoms which have mass and take up space, while things like light and energy that have no mass or volume are called anti-matter. Matter forms elements, which are a single type of atom, and compounds, which are molecules made of two or more elements. There are four states of matter: solids have a definite shape and volume, liquids have a volume but no definite shape, gases have no definite shape or volume and are mostly invisible, and plasma is gas-like but has some shape as the electrons become electrically or magnetically charged.

All matter is made of ATOMS!

Matter has
mass and
takes up
space!
What is not made of atoms is called…
Anti-matter: light, sound, heat, energy!
Takes up no space and has no mass
Matter forms substances.
How substances are formed= Chemistry

1. Element- one kind of atom. 92 natural elements on

this planet.
Example: Carbon=C= an atom of carbon

2. Compounds- two or more atoms combine to form a

molecule. H2O= a molecule of water made of 2
Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen atom
Elements and compounds can change phases
or states. There are 4 states of matter.

SOLID
Has definite shape and volume
Second state of matter is:

LIQUID
Has no definite shape but has volume!
3rd state of matter:

GAS

Has no definite shape or volume and is

mostly invisible!
4th state of matter is:

PLASMA
Gas-like but has some shape! The electrons become
electrically or magnetically charged! Found at star
temperatures, in Neon lights, lightening and
fluorescent bulbs!
