EMS System Chain:


Patient  Citizen calls 911  911 Dispatcher  First Responders  EMTs  ER Staff  Allied
Health

EMS Levels:
1) 1st Responder:
- First at scene 3) EMT - Intermediate:
- Police, firefighter, etc. - Shock Trauma & Critical Care

2) EMT - Basic: 4) EMT - Paramedic:


- Provides basic life support - More advanced level of care
- Assessment & care of patient

EMT Roles and Responsibilities:

 Personal Safety
- Keep yourself Safe*  Lifting/Moving
- *Fires, gunshots, explosions! - Don’t harm the patient any further
- Be very careful
 Crew Safety
- Take care of crew  Transport
- Also for bystanders - Safety first
- Careful driving
 Patient Assessment - Securing/Caring for patient
- What is wrong with patient?
- Assess after Emergency Care  Transfer of Care
- Patient  EMT  Dr.
 Patient Care - Provide accurate information
- Emotional Support - NEVER ABANDON PATIENT
- Life-saving CPR - Tells Drs. all info regarding patient
- Defibrillation status/concerns

Quality Improvement: Standing Order:

- Continuous self-review - Physician or Med. Direct. issues a policy


- More improvement protocol that authorizes EMTs to perform
- Quality Care: special skills in certain situations. (i.e. glucose
- Keeping carefully written documentation administration – no direct (live) speaking to Dr.,
- NEATLY WRITTEN & “off-line medical direction”)
CORRECT/ACCURATE
- Becoming involved in the quality process On-line Medical direction:
- Obtaining feedback from patients &
hospital staff On-call or on-duty Dr. giving orders to EMT
- Marinating all emergency equipment over radio/telephone regarding patient care or
administration of certain drugs, etc.
