Petro Gasoline Purity Tester: Krishna Kumari Sahoo REGN NO: 0701209062

This document describes a petroleum gasoline purity tester that uses a fiber optic sensor. It operates on the principles of refractometry and evanescent wave absorption to measure the refractive index of gasoline and detect adulterants like kerosene. The system works by removing the cladding from an optical fiber to create an evanescent field that interacts with the surrounding gasoline sample. Variations in the refractive index due to impurities cause changes in light absorption and transmission that are measured. The device offers advantages like electromagnetic immunity, distributed sensing, safety, and sensitivity to enable portable on-road gasoline quality testing.

INTRODUCTION
Adulteration of petroleum product has become a
serious problem.
Kerosene is added to petrol, because
• Easy availability of kerosene
• Miscible in petrol and desiel
• Difference in price
Problems caused are
• Less availability of kerosene to poor
• Severely damaging automotive engines
• Increased motor vehicle emissions

Different methods for checking:
• Filter test
• ASTM distillation
• µP based electronic method
• Ultrasonic technique
• Titration technique
We use fiber optic sensor, which includes
• Refractometric sensor
• Evanescent wave absorption sensor
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
• Cladding of the optical fiber is removed and is
surrounded by a medium whose refractive index
changes with some physical or chemical
parameter,
• it results in variation of the output power due to
variation in the numerical aperture (NA) of the
sensing region
• Thus the R.I. of surrounding medium can be
measured
• This is the basis of “fiber optic refractometry”
CONTINUED…
• Power transmitted in the presence of an
absorbing medium is
P(z) = Po exp(-γz)
• Evanescent absorbance of an unclad fiber is
given by
A = log10 [Po/P(z)]
=γL / 2.303
• According to Lambert-Beer’s law of
absorption, A α L

Three main categories of liquid crystals.

• Smectic
• Nematic
• Cholestric
There are two types of LCD’s according to
the theory operation
• Dynamic scattering
• Field effect
ADVANTAGES
• Immunity to electromagnetic interference
• Distributed sensing over long lengths of
fiber
• Safe operations in hazardous environments
• High sensitivity and accuracy
CONCLUSION
Proposed sensor would be useful in automotive
and petrochemical industries due to:
• simple design
• safety with inflammable fuels,
• sensitivity
• can be made into a portable device for on-
road measurements
