Topic 10

Section 1: Climate - History - Religion.

1. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for
students to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and
mathematics. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
Although both history and literature are essential subjects in a curriculum, I think it is more
important for students to study math and literature. I believe this because due to these
subjects, students develop curious thoughts; students get better jobs in the future; and
students get popularity in their social circle.

Firstly, students should take science and math courses because these help them to improve
their logical reasoning, analytic skills and proper organization of ideas. All these virtues are
vital in daily life, even after school. As an example, in my high school, I asked so many
questions to my physics teacher and it took me a lot of time to think and solve the answers of
the math questions. Now I can solve any kind of problem easily.

Typically the school syllabus for history and literature on the other hand comprises of
learning a lot of topics by heart and then writing them all down during exam. After the exam,
almost no one really remembers what all they had mugged up. The French wars and the Dark
Ages are all forgotten by the time the term is over.

Secondly, studying science and mathematics opens many more doors for the future career.
In today’s life people can find more jobs based on science and math subjects. However,
there are fewer jobs related to art subjects. For instance, we can find more jobs in the field
of biotechnology, engineering and information technology. Students can find more jobs by
studying science and math subjects.

Thirdly, students should take science and math subjects because it helps them to become
famous in their social circle. Students who study science subjects become more popular
within their families and friends due to their abilities to develop things and show their
imaginations in reality. For illustration, one of my friends is very popular in his community
because he makes unique science models and put them in science exhibitions. People
admire him because he has the capability to invent new things. Science students become
more popular among people.

In conclusion, students should concentrate more in art and math subjects because it
develops thinking. It helps them to have more jobs. Also, it helps them to get social
prestige.

Section 2: Social problems - Politic - Housing

1. Why immigrants leave their own coutries?
- some are in political danger at home.
- Join relatives who already live abroad.
- A third group simply want a better social and economic future for their families.
2. problems caused by immigration:
- take jobs from other people.
- Refuse to integrate with the rest of the population.
- Contribute to social problems (drugs, crimes, etc).
Why debate:
- those problems caused by immigration are worse in recent years: unemployment, crime and
prices increase.
- The death of the Communism -> freedom to travel -multi -racial.

3. Any lives are in danger when hastily erected buildings collapse because safety
standards have been sacrificed to hopes of a quick profit. To prevent disasters of this
kind, governments should play a greater role in setting and enforcing safety standards
for building construction.

4. Safety standards are important when building people’s homes. Who should be
responsible for enforcing strict building codes - the government or the people who build
the homes?

5. Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace
them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your
opinion.

6. Students at universities often have a choice of places to live. They may choose to live
in university dormitories, or they may choose to live in apartments in the community.
Compare the advantages of living in university housing with the advantages of living in
an apartment in the community. Where would you prefer to live? Give reasons for your
preference.

7. A country’s first duty to its citizen is to protect them. Therefore it is logical that
defence should take up a significant proportion of national budget. For or gainst?

8. In the late 20th century, many cities are being rapidly redeveloped. In this process,
the needs of special interest groups, such as people with physical disabilities, are
sometimes taken into account. How can society improve conditions for people with
physical disabilities?

9. A public figure should not expect to have his/her private life.

Others questions:
• Do you agree that teachers should use corporal punishment as a means of discipline?
• Do you think in vitro fertilisation should be available to parents so they can choose the
sex of their child?
• In an overpopulated world, should people be free to have as many children as they
want?
• Is there public assistance in your country?
• What are some expectations parents have for their children?
• What are some reasons that people become homeless?
• What are some things people can do to eliminate discrimination and prejudice?
• What do you think is the most serious problem in the world?
• Why do you think so?
• What can we do as individuals to solve this problem?
• What types of noise pollution do you hate the most?
