Question 5-

How did you attract/address

your audience?

Here are some real media products that I

have analysed on how they attract/address
their own audience in comparison to my
product..

Through my research, such as in this in VIBE magazine cover, they have
used masculine colours such as red and black. What VIBE have also
tried to do, to attract their audience is to have a main image that can
relate back to their target market, teenagers. They have done this by
putting a famous teenage musician on the front cover taking up most of
the cover. What they have also done with the teenager is to have a
moody expression on his face also relating back to the teenage
stereotype. Another useful feature they have used is the use of a bold
and big title, masthead and subtitles. This also relates back to their
target market of teenagers as teenagers are less attracted to
sophisticated styles, therefore the use of a big and bold font is
appealing.
Throughout the cover of the VIBE magazine, they have written one-
word names, such as down the right hand column. They have done this
because teenagers will become easily bored with lots of writing.
Another way VIBE music magazine have tried to attract their audience is the use of mise-en-
scene. This includes the use of a plain t-shirt which is common in teenagers as they aren’t
fussed with clothing or looking smart. The use of a ‘cap’ on Chris Brown’s (main image) head
slanted to one side also shows a rebel character, another common feature in the ‘chav’ look in
the teenage lifestyle. This ‘chav’ lifestyle also includes jewelry, watches and bracelets, or in
other terms ‘bling’ which is all included with Chris Brown.

Although ‘ELLE’ is not a music magazine, I could not
find a suitable teenage girl music magazine which is
easily contrasted with the VIBE cover, therefore this is
the closest I could get. ‘ELLE’ have tried to attract their
audience in many different ways which are fairly easy
to notice. One of these ways is the use of feminine
colours throughout the cover. These colours include
pink and purple. This immediately gives the audience
an idea for who the magazine is aimed at, girls. What I
also noticed was the use of sophistication in the fonts
used on the cover. This font is very sharp giving the
impression that it isn’t aimed at young children, but
more at older women, perhaps aged 20-30. What also
is used to show the audience that it’s a girly magazine
is the use of a famous middle aged women musician. If
they wanted to, they could easily change this around
and aim it at men if Beyonce (main image) were to
wear something very revealing, but instead for this
cover, she is wearing a very elegant dress which
females might find interesting.

And now my own product..

My magazine
For my own magazine cover, I have tried to attract and
address my audience in many ways.
My first, and main part for the audience to know who the
magazine is aimed at, is the main image. I have tried to
attract my audience by using an image, I took myself in a
photo-shoot of a teenage boy (Brandon) on the cover.
My main image can be attractive to both boys and girls in
the sense that boys will be attracted as he may be a ‘role
model’ as he is a old teenagers and has a very cool sense
of style. And for girls, he may be classified as attractive
because he is older and wiser. I have used Brandon
because he suits the stereotype of a typical teenager. This
includes hoodies, odd hairstyles and moody expression.
This will make the reader feel related to the magazine
and want to read on further. The use of mise-en-scene
also adds to this. This includes earrings, which relates to
the ‘chav’ lifestyle which is very common in teens. A
plain black t-shirt is another effect I have used as it
shows he doesn’t care about how he looks and doesn’t
want to look smart because it’s not ‘cool’. This is also
stereotypical of how a normal teenager thinks.

My magazine
Another main feature to attract my audience is that I have used the colours red, black and
yellow, this is a mix of basic colours but they are predominantly boyish which is related to
my target audience. I have used these colours throughout my cover, my contents page and
my double page spread. I have spread these colours all over my magazine cover because I
feel teenagers will be attracted to the bright and vibrant cover and will want to read these.
For the use of font, I have used a fairly bold and big font. This is because it will attract
teenagers as they will become less satisfied or dis-interested with small text in which they
have to pick up the magazine and look closely as they are stereotypically, ‘lazy’.
Like with VIBE, I have used this font all over my cover, contents and double page spread to
make teenagers aware it is aimed at them. Teenagers will not want a sophisticated font as
they may find this boring and a turn-off to the magazine as a whole.
At the bottom of my cover, I have included a red banner, in this, it offers tickets to be won at
‘2000 trees festival’ and ‘Glastonbury’. This I feel will attract teenagers as it is a very famous
young generation event and the chance to get these tickets free is very appealing. This I feel
will make the my audience want to open the magazine and read into it on how they can win
this.
