Scene 1

(3 raindrops fall in the front of of a black back ground and then the cats picture
shows.)

Narrator-Dr. Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat presents… Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in The Hat.

( Rain downpours outside in the front of a small house, with two kids popping
their heads outside of the window. Watching as the rain poured down.)
[Narrator] There are gajillions of stories... of mischief and fun, but to keep things simple,
let's start with just one... about a mom and two kids... and a house and a hat... that,
oddly enough, was worn by a cat. But soon enough we will get to all that. In the valley
that stretches from this hill to that hill, a city is nestled... that city is Anville.

Narrator- The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we sat in the house all
that cold, cold, wet day. I, Conrad sat there with Sally. We sat there, we two.

Mom- Good bye kids! I have to go pick up some shoes, will be back in a few.

(Mom steps out.)

Narrator- I sat there with Sally. We sat there, we two. And I said…

Conrad- How I wish we had something to do!

Narrator- Too wet to go out, and too cold to play ball. So we sat in the house. We
did nothing at all. Nothing at all, nothin’, nothin’, positively nothing to be done. So
all we could do is sit, sit, (yawn)… Sit, sit. And we did not like it. Not one little bit.
And then something went bump! How that bump made us jump! We looked!
Then we saw him step in on the mat! ( an umbrella shows itself, then back, then
the colorful red and white hat, then with three wipes of his feet) We saw…

Sally- A cat!

Conrad- In a hat!

The cat- You will note, I am neat! I wiped my feet on the mat. (walks toward
them) Why do you sit there like that? I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny.
But we can have lots of good fun that is funny! I know some good games we could
play, I know some new tricks. A lot of good tricks. I will show them to you. Your
mother will not mind at all if I do.

Narrator- Said the Cat in the Hat. Then Sally and I did not know what to say. Our
mother was out of the house for the day.

Fish- No! No! Make that cat go away! Tell that cat in the hat you do not want to
play!
The cat- hmmm I’m afraid we’ve not met, what is your name.

Fish- The name is Krinklebine, Carlos K. Krinklebine. Now then, he should not be
here. He should not be about. He should not be here when your mother is out!

The cat- Now, now! Have no fear. Why we can have lots of good fun, if you wish,
with a game That I call Up-up-up with a fish!

Fish- Put me down! This is not fun at all! I do not wish to FALL!

The cat- Have no fear, look at me now! It is fun to have fun, but you have to know
how. I can hold up a cake, I can hold up these books, and a fish on a rake! I can
hold the toy ship and a little toy man! And look with with my tail I can hold a red
fan, I can fan with the fan, as I hop on the ball! But that is not all. Oh, no. That is
not all….

Narrator- That is what the cat said… Then he fell on his head! He came down with
a bump From up there on the ball. And Sally and I, We saw ALL the things fall! Our
fish came down too. He fell into a pot!

Fish- I do not like this, not one bit, Get out!!!!!

The cat- well, if that’s your decision, then… ill leave as you say.

(the cat walks out, Then barges back)

Someone stole my family’s three handed grudanza!!!

Conrad- Excuse me sir but what?!

Sally- Three handed grudanza?!!!

The cat- Was it you Krinklestine!!!!!

Fish- No im clean, I swear!!!

(The cat walks over to a mysteriously appeared piano)

The cat- (Singing) My Grudanza, Gradanza, I don’t have it ANYMORE!!

Conrad- Ahhh give it back Krinklebine.

Sally- He just wants his whatever its called.

The cat- Ah Ha!!! I know how to find it. So, So so… I will show you another good
game that I know!

Narrator- And then he ran out. And then, as fast as a fox The Cat in the Hat, came
in with a box. A big red wood box. It was shut tight with a hook.

The cat- Now look at this trick, take a look! With a tip of my hat, I show you this
game. A game I call fun in a box, in this box are two things. I will pick up the hook
and you will see something new. Two things, I call them Thing One and Thing Two.
They will not bite you. They want to have fun!

Narrator- came thing two and thing one! The ran to us fast and said….

Thing 1, 2- How do you do? We are thing one and thing two!

Narrator- sally and I did not know what to do so we said…

Conrad, Sally- How do you do, Thing one, Thing two!

Fish- No! No! No! They should not be here when your mother is not! Put them
out! Put them out!

The cat- Have no fear, like I have said before, they are two good things, two good
things for sure! They will show you some fun on this wet, wet day.

(Chase scene improve)

Fish- Look! Look! Your mother is near, she is on her way home! Do you hear? Oh,
what will she do to us? What will she say, oh she will not like it to find us this way!

(Thing one and thing two run back into their box)

The cat- Oh dear! You do not like this game… Oh Dear. What a shame, shame,
shame!
Conrad- Now do as I say. You pack up those Things, and you take them away.

Narrator-The cat picked up the box, and then left with his shame, for it was not
fun, this sad, sad game. And the cat went away with a sad kind of look.

Fish- This is good, he has gone away. Yes. But your mother will come. She will find
this big mess! And this mess is so big, and so deep and so tall, we can not pick it
up. There no way at all!

Narrator- And then! Who was back in the house? Why, the cat!

The cat- Have no fear of this mess, I always pick up all my playthings. And so… I
will show you another good trick that I know!

Narrator- he picked up the mess with no problem at that, and then he said…

The cat- That is that.

Narrator- and then he was gone, with a tip of his hat. Then our mother came in
and she said to us two…

Mother- Did you have any fun. Tell me. What did you do? Ill tell you what
happened on my very long day. By a whip and a lash, by the time I passed by. I
saw a cat in a hat, walking near by.

Narrator- and sally and I did not know what to say. Should we tell her the
things that went on there that day? Should we tell her about it? Now, what
should we do? Well… Well, what would you do If your mother asked you?
The family was whole, all thanks to the Cat, who was dashing and
charming, no doubt about that. He was witty and cultured... and, well, very
endearing... and tremendously attractive, but in a sort of real way. You
know, kind of an approachable way that I think you don't see these days...
