Answer The Questions Given in The Space Provided

Infosys has advantages over competitors in implementing an e-procurement system for PFS due to its knowledge of PFS's existing IT systems and business domain. However, Infosys faces challenges with knowledge transition and marketing an offshore outsourcing model. For re-engineering projects, Infosys was able to transfer 150 engineers to other PFS projects at no extra cost, representing a direct savings of $480,000. Infosys also wrote a subroutine to prevent data corruption issues, saving PFS over $21,000 per event in employee idle time and support costs.

Answer the questions given in the space provided.

1. How is Infosys placed w.r.t Excalibur and Merrimac Consulting in competing for the implementation of
Java based Arima based e procurement system? (10marks)

Advantages Challenges
Knowledge of PFS IT System Knowledge transition for the system
Knowledge of PFS business/ domain (developed by other vendors) is time and effort
Lower learning curve consuming process
Quick turnaround Marketing Offshore outsourcing model
Difficulty in marketing the maintenance of
legacy system
Highlighting the business domain excellence

2. Assess the additional value Infosys has created for PFS in “Re- engineering project
assignments” and “Data corruption prevention subroutine”? (10marks)
(a) Re- Engineering project assignment

Infosys was involved in scrutinizing the nature of the tasks in each project, reengineering each project and
planning the allocation of resources. There was a surplus 150 engineers in Bangalore who were transferred to
other PFS projects at “no extra charge” to PFS.

Given that the cost of a fulfillment equivalent (FTE) are $8000 p.m in the U.S and $3,200 p.m. in India , the
resource reductions represent a significant benefit for PFS.
There is a direct saving of $ 3200 * 150 = $ 480,000/-

(b) Data Corruption Prevention Subroutine

Before Infosys was awarded the responsibility of maintaining legacy systems there was a problem with the batch
programs. It occasionally ran later than 5:00 a. m. corrupting the data of central database and shutdown the
online system. This resulted in idling 125 PFS workers for at least 4 hours.

Engineer at Infosys wrote a subroutine that automatically shutdown all batch programs at 5:00 a. m.

The cost incurred

1. Employees idle time (125 engineers for 4 hour each @ $ 42 per hour) $ 21000
2. One corruption event (3 engineers for 4 hours each @ $ 45 per hour) $ 540
3. Technical support assistance (1 engineer for 1 hour @ $ 40 per hour) $ 40

The total saving is $ 21680. This does not include and hardware or the processing cost.
