Simulation of Methane Hydrate Behavior in A Porous Media: K.B. Tsiberkin, Supervisor: D.V. Lyubimov

The document summarizes simulations of methane hydrate behavior in porous media. In simulations with low permeability, the hydrate-free channel is slowly filled with hydrate over years as the initial temperature distribution diffuses. In high permeability simulations, the hydrate dissociates as strong convective flow of hot gas raises the channel temperature. The document examines methane hydrates as both a potential energy source and cause of climate change, and models their behavior using standard Darcy equations to describe natural temperature and pressure gradients.

Methane Hydrates in Nature

- Molecular structure consists from water molecules. Methane molecules are

confined in the skeleton with Van-der-Vaals forces.
- Hydrates are spread widely at the sea shelf and in the permafrost area.
- They are examined as a great fuel source. Hydrates can cause the global climate
disaster too.

Problem Statement

- Simulation of methane hydrate behavior in natural conditions is made. An

investigated system is cylindrical hydrate-free channel running through the stable
layer of hydrate, with the natural temperature and pressure gradients.
- Problem description is based on standard Darcy’s model.

- In case of the low permeability, channel is filled up with hydrate. The process lasts
for years.
