Discuss How The Speed of Storage Devices and Memory Is Defined
The speed of storage devices and memory is defined by access time. Access time is important as
it measures the time taken for the storage device to search an item on a storage medium. Besides
that, it is the time required to transfer or deliver an item from memory to processor. The access
time of memory is faster than the access time of storage devices. The speed of a storage device is
measured in RPMs or Revolutions per Minute. The faster the RPM, the faster the drive can
access data. Nowadays, most laptops have 5,400 RPM HDDs and most desktop computers have
7,200 RPM. Memory accesses items in nanoseconds. However, storage devices access items in
milliseconds only which are slower. Instead of access time, the manufacturer’s states storage
devices’ transfer rate as it affects the access time. Transfer rate is the speed which data or
information transfer to and from a device. Transfer rate is different from access time where it is
measured in KBps ( kilobytes per second) and MBps ( megabytes per second) whereas access
time is measured in seconds. The table below shows the comparison between the transfer rates
between memory and storage medias.
