Tools of The Analyst

The document discusses various tools used in systems analysis including data flow diagrams (DFDs), entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), flowcharts, Gantt charts, decision tables, HIPO charts, and Nassi-Schneidermann charts. It provides brief descriptions of each tool, their basic components and symbols. DFDs are used to represent data flows in a system. ERDs illustrate relationships between entities in a database using boxes, diamonds and ovals. The document includes examples and diagrams for some of the tools.

Data Flow Diagram
-A graphical representation of the "flow" of data
through an information system. DFDs can also be
used for the visualization of data processing.
-On a DFD, data items flow from an external data
source or an internal data store to an internal data
store or an external data sink, via an internal
process.
-Data-flow diagrams were invented by Larry Constantine,
the original developer of structured design, based on
Martin and Estrin's "data-flow graph" model of
computation.

DFD Guidelines
• all icons must be labeled with meaningful
names
• the DFD evolves through a number of levels of
detail
• always begin with a context level diagram
(also called level 0)
• always show external entities at level 0
• always label data flow arrows
• information flow continuity must be maintained
from level to level

ERDs
– An entity-relationship (ER) diagram is a
specialized graphic that illustrates the
interrelationships between entities in a database.
– ER diagrams often use symbols to represent three
different types of information.
– Boxes are commonly used to represent entities.
– Diamonds are normally used to represent
relationships and ovals are used to represent
attributes.
– Use to design of database

Gantt Chart
A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt
charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and
summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements
comprise the work breakdown structure of the project.
