An Introduction to the Psalms of Ascent, Psalms 120-134

BACKGROUND NOTES
SERMON SERIES

I CALL ON THE LORD in my distress, and he answers me. (Psalms 120:1 NIV)

The Psalms of Ascent are a resource for private prayer, but much more than that. They are meant to enrich the life of Gods people as a body. These Psalms were originally brought together for groups of pilgrims to sing as they made their way up to Jerusalem. Why were they going there?

We will take one Psalm each Sunday. The program may change, of course, but the current schedule looks like this: June 5th - Psalm 120 (Missions collection), title: Moving On June 12th - Psalm 121, title: The Guardian June 19th - Psalm 122 (Fathers Day service) June 26th - Psalm 123 (London Teens Service ) July 3rd - Psalm 124 (Thanksgiving service) July 10th - London Service July 17th - Psalm 125 July 24th - Psalm 126 July 31st - Psalm 127 August 7th - Psalm 128 August 14th - Psalm 129 August 21st - Psalm 130 August 28th - Psalm 131 September 4th - Psalm 132 September 11th - London Service September 18th - Psalm 133 September 25th - Psalm 134 (Invitation service, Mike Desouza speaking, title: The Maker).

THE MAJOR FESTIVALS

Three times a year all Jewish men were required to worship in Jerusalem (Ex 23:17 & Deut 16:16). Women and children came when they could, but the men formed the bulk of these pilgrimages.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PSALMS

To worship at the temple was exciting, but also intimidating. They were going to the place of the glory of the LORD (the shekinah). They needed to be spiritually prepared for this encounter. Therefore the fteen Psalms of Ascent were sung as the groups of pilgrims made their way up the steep paths to Jerusalem. In doing so they were reminded of who they were (they had been chosen, not earned this privilege) and reminded of the character of God. These Psalms can help prepare us too - for worship and for life. Let us learn them and sing them together.
