Sometimes the equation of a line is not given in the form y = mx + c. In these cases we need to rearrange our equations..e.g. Subtract x from both sides Then rearrange Now we can see that m = -1 and c = 2 3.

Straight Line Graphs

When the equation of a straight line is written in the form

y = mx + c
m is the gradient and c is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). 1. Complete the following table e.g. y = 5x + 2 In this case m = +5 and c = +2 i.e. the gradient is 5 and the straight line will cross the axis at the point (0,2). Equation y = 5x + 2 y = 4x + 7 y = x 4 y = 3x 2 y = 7x y = x + y = 4x + 7 y = 3 7x 2. Complete the table using the information given Gradient (m) 2 2 0 4 5 4 3 y-intercept (c) 3 5 2 0 4 9 2 Equation (y = mx + c) Gradient (m) 5 y-intercept (c) 2

Sometimes the equation of a line is not given in the form y = mx + c. In these cases we need to rearrange our equations until they take the form y = mx + c. .e.g. Subtract x from both sides Then rearrange Now we can see that m = 1 and c = 2 3. Complete the following table Equation x+y=2 x + y = 4 y 3x = 1 y = 3(x + 5) y = 2(x ) xy=0 These are a bit tricky. Be Careful! 3y = 6x 9 3x + 2y = 4 3y = (x 4) 4x 5y = 5
x y 5 + = 3 4 6

x+y=2 x+yx=2x y = x + 2
