Gears

Gears are rotating machine parts that have teeth which mesh to transmit power. There are several types of gears classified by their configuration and the relative positions of their shafts. Gears can have parallel shafts, intersecting shafts, or non-parallel and non-intersecting shafts. Common types of gears include spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, worm gears, and rack and pinion gears, each suited for different applications depending on factors like speed, load, noise, and whether rotational or linear motion is required.

GEARS

A gear is a rotating machine part having teeth ,which meshes with another part to transmit power Types of gears:1.According to their configuration a)external gears b)internal gears 2.According to the relative positions of their shaft axis a) Parallel shafts b) Intersecting shafts c) Non parallel ,Non intersecting TYPES OF GEARS:a) Parallel shafts:1.spur gear:i)In these the teethare parallel to the axis of the gear ii) At the time of engagement of the two gears the contact extends to the entire width iii) Because of this sudden application of load noise is mor e at high speeds 2.Helical gears i) In these the teeth are slightly inclined tothe axis of the shaft ii)At the beginning the point of contact is point contac t &extends as the gear rotates along the diagonal line across the teeth iii) Noise is less iv) Difficult to manufacture

DOUBLE HELICAL GEARS: -

i)To avoid the axial thrust two Helical gears of opposite side Can be mounted side by side to cancel the two thrusts ii) These are mostly used in heavy power transmission at moderate speed with less noise

INTERSECTING SHAFTS
Bevel gears:i)The teeth are straight &radial to the point of intersection of shafts

3.NON PARALLEL NON INTERSECTING

a)Worm& Worm wheel:i) mainly used for speed reduction ii) It is irreversal b)Spiral gears:i) point of contact of two is a point contact ii) Used for low power transmission RACK &PINION GEAR:i)A rack is a special type of gear which is having infinite diameter ii)Spur rack &pinion combination converts rotary motion into translatory motion
