UNITY IN MALAYSIA AND TEACHERS ROLE TOWARDS UNITY Unity is a state of being one.

A united nation is large community of people that share a common history, language, economic and other characteristics living in a particular territory under one government. Malaysia is a multiracial country having different races background, cultures, religions, economic, politics and social. Due to these differences among the races, unity among the nation in Malaysia is not easy to achieve. Malaysians must work together to shoulder the responsibility of preserving social peace and harmony by always compromising with each other. Good relationship among difference races and ethnics is important especially after the chaotic situation on 13 May 1969. The government had implemented various programmes towards unity among the nation such as New Economic Plan (NEP), National Culture and generate similar ideology, the Rukun Negara. There are numerous factors that will hinder the unity in Malaysia. The first factor is the inequalities and prejudices among races that still exist. Secondly, racialism and self-selfishness towards their respective race in terms of economics, politics, social and cultures determining factors for unity. Other factors are elements of ethnocentrism, ignorance towards other races, racial political and difference in socio-economic and cultures. Hence, if these factors are unattended or remain unresolved our nation will not be able to live in peace and harmony. The citizens should always be on the alert so that they wont be easily influenced by narrow religions and political ideologies. It is the obligation of everyone to strengthen unity among the nation. We should practise and promote positive thinking as everyone has a role to ensure that the society of different races background is united. We must enhance the spirit of unity and cooperation and act in a more mature and national way without succumbing to feelings and emotion. Teachers have important roles to play in moulding childrens attitudes and thinking. It is the adults who determine the growth of positive traits in children which can save the country from ethnic conflicts, especially in a multi racial society. Teachers often referred to as a role model. Teachers need foster better generation in nation building and all these could be done by implementing and organizing various co-curriculum activities in schools. The Pupils Integration For Unity (RIMUP) programme will sow the seeds of unity and integration among the younger generation. This programme would exert a positive impact on both students and the society in the long run. This is due to the students natural ability to be infused with the spirit of unity, which will encourage national integration. The RIMUP programme will benefit in cultivating friendship and understanding among students of various ethnics groups. Teachers must get students from various ethnics to participate in the games, clubs and uniform units. There should be no more games only for one ethnic but it must be opened to all ethnics. As example, in the past years football game was only played by the malays or bumiputera but nowadays, there are Chinese and Indians involved and the situation goes with basketball game, which is dominated only by Chinese students but now we can see there are many students from other ethnics involved. All these are important for building the unity among students because they can communicate and socialize with others. As conclusion, it is important for every nation especially teachers to preserve and maintaining unity and not split the young people for self interest as this will lead to the downfall

of the country. There is a strong need for the nation to remember and practice the five precepts of Rukun Negara. This will definitely help in ensuring peace and harmony for the future of new generation. Unity is the pillar of our country and nation development as a whole 1 Malaysia. Every citizen of this country should be united, thus maintaining the harmonious way of life is a must to ensure our country will be independent forever.
