WELCOME BIENVENIDOS

18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JULY 31, 2011

18VO DOMINGO EN TIEMPO ORDINARIO

From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! Were all familiar with the saying: Theres no free lunch. Or, as we might say here in California, Theres no free brunch. Either way, we are warned that everything has its price; apparently almost nothing is free in this world. Yet, in contrast, in this weeks Scriptural passagesboth in the Old Testament (Isaiah 55:1-3) and Gospel readings (Matthew 14:13-21), we are told that the exact opposite is true. In the words of Isaiah, we are welcomed to what is surely a sneak preview of heaven, of the messianic banquet: Come, without paying, and without cost, drink wine and milk. In like manner, Jesus, his heart moved with pity for the tired and hungry crowd before Him, proceeds to feed them fish and bread, with enough leftovers to fill a dozen wicker baskets. When we start to realize our need for God and our complete dependence upon Him for every good thing in our lives, we start to become truly grateful. And an essential expression of genuine gratitude is the desire and decision to give to others in recognition of Gods generosity to us. Give them (the crowds) some food yourselves, Jesus tells his disciples. He not only challenges and instructs them (and us) as to the necessity of service, He himself proceeds to model it through His own, open-handed generosity. So, who are the hungry and thirsty among us? We dont have to think too hard at all on that point. For example, at this moment, upwards of 11 million people in East Africavictims of famine and drought face virtual starvation. The people of Norwaya wealthy country by any measurement of material prosperityare nevertheless stunned and devastated by the senseless killings in and near Oslo. Many of them are certainly in need of comfort, compassion, and consolation. On a less global, but no less important level, we need to ask ourselves: Who are the hungry and thirsty in our midst? How can we be instruments of Gods peace, love and generosity toward them? We need to think about our youth as well as our seniors; military families; single parents and families affected by divorce; the sick, homebound, and imprisoned. Those who have lost their jobs and see only very dim prospects of new employment. Our brothers and

sisters caught in clinical depression, trapped in addictions, overwhelmed with suffering of body, mind, soul, and spirit. And the list goes on. The needs are endless and our resources both individual and collectiveappear to be so limited: How can we help? In a way, we cant. But God can. Jesus, in symbolic anticipation of the Eucharistic meal, called upon the Father to bless the bread of His commitment. We, too, are challenged to ask God to bless our best efforts. Then, we need to get out of Gods way so that God can heal and feed our broken world through us.

Elsewhere in the Parish:

Like many other parishioners, Im still basking in the afterglow of our beautiful 2nd Annual Multicultural Talent Show last weekend. Nearly 800 parishioners and others were on hand to share the bountiful feast/s prepared by members of the Guamanian, Filipino, Samoan, American and Hispanic communities. The food was just great! And there were even hot dogs and slices of pizza available ample portions for every palate. Inside, we were treated to nearly three hours worth of incredible local talent as so many of our parishioners stepped forward to share freely of their extraordinary gifts of song and dance. Rumor has it that even a few Franciscans were on stage! Thanks again to everyone who worked so hard and gave so generously! You may have noticed the table set up outside the Serra Center recently for food sales after the weekend Masses. Our Hispanic community is providing tacos, pozole, beverages-- and even background music!to help promote our upcoming celebration of the Feast Day of St. Louis, King of France (aka San Luis Rey) on August 26, starting at 7:30 pm. The Old Mission Church and gardens will be the venue of this very special Procession of the Saint. The procession of a 250 year-old statue of St. Louis will be accompanied by a live banda of more than a dozen musicians, followed by fireworks and refreshments in the Mission gardens. Admission: FREE! Come, without paying and without cost! God bless,

Fr. Chuck

The New Missal

By Bill Bischoff
1) Why does the Church change the Liturgy? In its Liturgy, the Church always attempts to follow the norm of its holy Fathers this effort requires not only the preservation of what our past church Fathers have handed on to us, but also an understanding and a profound reflection on the Churchs entire pastthis broader view allows us to see how the Holy Spirit endows the people of God with a marvelous fidelity in preserving the deposit of faith within the diversity of the great variety of prayers and rites. The liturgy must always celebrate and make present the Paschal Sacrifice of Christ-his Passion, Death and Resurrection. Over time it becomes necessary to make certain changes, such as adding prayers for new saints and adding texts that reflect the needs that the People of God bring to God in prayer. This third edition of the Roman missal makes such additions and provides a fresh translation of the Latin texts that are present in the Missal. 2) What exactly is changing?

Stewardship of Treasure

In addition to your usual offering, there will be a special collection today for the Franciscan missionary Union. The Franciscans ask for your generous support; it goes a long way in helping us evangelize and serve communities that are extremely poor financially.

The structure of the Mass (the order of the prayers, actions of the priest and so forth) remains unchanged in the new edition of the Roman Missal. However, the translation of the prayer texts will change to more closely reflect the original Latin texts. In some cases, new options for prayers may be available, and some old options may not be present. 3) Will the changes be noticeable? In this third edition of the Roman Missal, almost every prayer in the Mass those spoken by the priest and those spoken by the people has been retranslated from the Latin to English. Some prayers now recited by memory will need to be relearned, and the familiar language of many prayers recited by the priests will change. In preparing the new translation, the translators were asked to make the English texts conform more closely to the Latin originals and to retain traditional theological vocabulary that communicates important concepts of the faith. The language that the faithful will hear and pray is more formal and somewhat complex than the language of ordinary conversation. It conveys rich theological concepts and retains biblical language and images. 4) How are we preparing for the change? The next Catechetical minute will provide this information.

ASSIST WITH A BIBLE

At the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed over sixty five people receiving the sacraments necessary to complete their full entrance into the Church. One of the key elements of their catechesis is the coming to know the Scriptures, the Word of God, on a weekly basis. During weekly class and again when they gather on Sunday they come to build a relationship with Jesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives. For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candidates are given a Bible at the ceremony marking the beginning of their journey of faith. Our parish faith formation budget is stretched this year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help will be greatly appreciated if you could help us with providing Bibles to our RICA groups (both English & Spanish). A donation of $20.00, or any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechumen or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Office or Bill Bischoffs office, or drop it into the collection in an envelope marked BIBLES. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, call Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702.

Continuacin

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,

Dear Parish Family, HAPPY (FISCAL) NEW YEAR Our parish has embarked on a new fiscal year which began on July 1, 2011 and runs through June 30, 2012. Quite soon we will publish the financial report for the year just completed but I need to speak to you now about this years budget. Just like you at home, we are experiencing rising costs and shrinking income. Our income is shrinking in two areas. First we will no longer rent the Serra Center for outside non-liturgical events. We have a contract to honor with Canine Companions for Independence that allows for a graduation in August and November of 2011. There will be no more. As so many of you have asked we will have a dedicated worship area. Secondly Casa De Amparo is vacating this year. Their rent has already been reduced by about $1000.00 per month (because they have given over space already) and will completely end in January or February of 2012. Total lost revenue for this fiscal year is $46,000.00. Next year will be in excess of $72,000.00. Expenses such as retirement funding for employee pensions have gone up, health insurance and other benefits have increased and with an increase in your giving has come an increase in our diocesan assessment. While we appreciate the generosity of so many volunteers to help us reduce miscellaneous expenses, our income requirements continue to climb. Our weekly collection requirement is now $24,400.00. This is an increase over last year of about $3000.00 per week. As a community we can reach our new revenue benchmark. We serve in the neighborhood of 2500 families on a given weekend. If each family can give just $2.00 more per week our burden will be light. I am confident that we can do this. It has been several years since we talked openly about stewardship of treasure and what it means to be good stewards of what God has given us. Over the next few weeks you will hear more on this topic. We ask that you discuss it within your families, that you pray over it, and with Gods help you will find an answer as to how you can respond. It may be through signing up for electronic funds transfer (EFT), or using that set of envelopes that are gathering dust or just making a decision to give of your first fruits. Whatever the solution we ask only that you be open to listen to what God may be calling you to. In Him all is possible. Thank you for all that you do, Allen B. Hartman Business Manager

No habrn ms despus.
