Formula of A Hydrate Lab

The purpose of the document is to find the formula of a hydrate by heating it to constant mass. The procedure involves measuring the mass of a hydrate sample and evaporating dish initially, then heating in intervals and measuring the mass until it remains constant. The data and analysis tables show the initial and final masses. The mole ratio of anhydrate to water is calculated as 4.35, with an expected ratio of 5, indicating the formula is CuSO4-5H2O, copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate.

Formula of a Hydrate Lab

Nick Schwarze 5/23/11 Per.4

Purpose: The Purpose is to find the formula of a hydrate by heating to constant mass. Procedure: 1. Begin by massing the evaporating dish provided. Once the dish is massed add the CuSO4 XH2O. 2. Mass the evaporating dish with substance and record the data, then begin heating to constant mass. 3. First time heat for 5 minutes and take the new mass. After, heat the dish in 2 minute intervals, taking the mass after each interval. Once the mass is constant, you can stop heating.

Data Table: Hydrate mass Heating Time (sec) 0 5 7 9 11 13 15 Mass(g) 49.22 47.48 47.69 47.45 47.45 47.45 47.45

Determining Ksp Lab

Purpose: The purpose is to determine the Ksp experimentally. Procedure: 1. Fill test tubes with equal levels of dH2O. 2. Once filled, add equal amounts of Mg(OH)2 to each test tube. 3. Stir the solutions and take pH readings with a pH meter. Record all data.

Analysis Table: Determining Ksp pH 10.61 10.31 10.29 10.43 10.51 10.47 10.39 10.44 10.52 10.36 Avg: 10.43 Ksp pOH 3.39 3.69 3.71 3.57 3.49 3.53 3.61 3.56 3.48 3.57 3.64 [OH-] 4.1x10-4M 2.0x10-4M 1.9x10-4M 2.5x10-4M 3.2x10-4M 3.0x10-4M 2.5x10-4M 2.8x10-4M 3.3x10-4M 2.7x10-4M 2.6x10-4M 9.13x10-12M
