Assessment Article Summary Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to expand your knowledge of a particular aspect of literacy assessment and to familiarize yourself with peer-reviewed articles which are one aspect of a teachers professional development. Students will select a journal article to read that specifically addresses literacy assessment. Articles must be approved by the course instructor and be selected from a peer-reviewed journal. Articles must focus on the following: Phonics/Phonemic Awareness (10/10) Fluency (10/24) Comprehension Strategies (11/14) Concepts about Print (10/3) Writing (10/7) Vocabulary (9/26)
You may determine the way in which you will respond to the reading and share their findings with the class. Some possible ways to respond may include: Do an author study. Who is this person (or people) who wrote this book? What is their background? What other research have they done? Use a graphic organizer to communicate ideas from the reading (Venn diagram, What I Read/What I Thought, Big Ideas/Application, Spider Map, KWL chart) Create a chart, diagram, graffiti wall to visually represent the ideas in your article Let me know if you think of something else you would like to try
Your Task: Read your article and do some sort of reading response On your assigned day to present, you will give a short (3-5 minutes) summary of your article to the class. You will turn in your response and your Article Presentation Reflection Sheet
1. What did you learn about assessment through this activity? Describe one new insight or interpretation that the author included in the article you presented. What was new or surprising about it?
2. Describe the most effective strategy or technique the author of your article used. Then describe the least effective strategy or technique.
