Beginning ~ 1
is able to independently identify but not describe the setting of a story.

Secure ~ 2
Has ability to independently identify AND describe the setting of a story.

Exceeds ~ 3
Proficient and has ability to explain why the author chose the setting for the story.

* Identify and describe the setting of a story.


Is able to independently identify but not describe the main character(s) of a story. Has ability to independently identify AND describe the main character(s) of a story. Is proficient and able to explain/support why they would or would not be friends with the character.

* Identify and describe the characters of a story.


Is able to independently identify but not describe the problem of a story. Has ability to independently identify AND describe the problem of a story. Is proficient and has ability to give a supported opinion about how the main character handled the problem.

* Identify and describe the problem of a story.


Is proficient and has ability to describe how the solution affected the main character. Is able to independently identify but not describe the solution of a story. Is unable to independently compare the elements of two stories together. Has ability to independently identify AND describe the solution of a story. Has ability to explain how 2 story elements are alike and different.

* Identify and describe the solution of a story.

* Compare the elements of one story to the elements of a second story.
