Author's Purpose Notes

Understanding an author's purpose is important for comprehending a text fully. There are three main purposes for writing: to entertain with creative works, to inform by providing factual information on unfamiliar topics through nonfiction, and to persuade by convincing the reader of a viewpoint typically through letters or editorials. Other purposes can include setting a mood, expressing personal feelings, or vividly describing an event from the author's perspective. Determining an author's intent helps the reader interpret the text appropriately.
