Solaris is a UNIX operating system originally developed by Sun Microsystems in 1993. It is known for its scalability, especially on SPARC systems, and for originating innovative features such as Dtrace, ZFS and Time Slider. Historically developed as proprietary software, Sun Microsystems released most of the codebase under an open source license in 2005 and founded the OpenSolaris project to build a developer community around the software. Oracle now owns Solaris since acquiring Sun in 2010.
