Andc 2007

The document presents a design problem for a place of worship that must follow some unusual design constraints. Specifically, the building must not contain any right angles between horizontal and vertical planes or between vertical planes. The site is a flat rectangular plot between 2800-3000 square meters, with a minimum 12m wide road on one short side. Participants are asked to submit up to 10 drawing sheets and a 15 page report presenting their design solution within the given constraints.

THE RIGHT ANGLE IS WRONG

Times change… People change… Needs change… Values change…

Styles change… Materials change… Technologies change…
Why not the built form?... Let it change tooo!

Step out of…. 'Step out of the box'… cliché!! …. and interpret … and reinterpret these changes.
Forget the box and with it… also forget the right angles… let us assume, for the moment,
that the right angle is all wrong!

So if the right angle is wrong, then what is right?

… Anything but the right angle is right!!

THE PROBLEM:
Design a place of worship that will consist of the following spaces:

1.A congregation hall for about 500 persons.

2.A meeting room for 11 trustees.
3.An administrative office for 4-5 persons.
4.A room for storing religious and other items.
5.Two multi-purpose rooms for teaching, meditation, yoga, etc. 75-80 sqm. each.
6.Five rooms with attached toilets, for accommodating religious dignitaries / guests.
7.Public toilets.
8.Adequate parking spaces.

Other assumptions can be made in accordance with / suited to the place of worship and its ideologies.

The structure/s should be energy efficient in keeping with the current needs. The spaces around the
structure/s should also be suitably designed to complement the built form.

THE CATCH:

There should be no right angles between any horizontal and vertical plane or between any
two vertical planes or for that matter between any planes within the built form!

THE SITE:

Assume any suitable flat rectangular site in the town in which your Institute is situated. The area
of the site should be between 2800 to 3000 square meters of which only 25% is the permissible ground
coverage. The site should have an approach road of minimum 12.0 m width on one of its shorter sides.
Any and all other assumptions that can have a bearing on the design should be prominently stated.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

 A maximum of 10 (ten) nos. separate A-1 size drawing sheets (no panels), comprising the architectural,
landscape and structural design concepts, site plan, plans at all levels, elevations, sections, 3-D views
(both internal & external), necessary details, views of models, etc. All sheets should be opaque unless they
are used as overlays. Each overlay (no bigger than A1) will be counted as an A1 sheet.

 The choice of scales to be used for the presentation is left to the discretion of the participants subject to
the conditions that only metric scales shall be used and that all the drawings shall be clear and fully legible.

All the drawings except the 3-D views shall be presented through means of hand made presentations.
Help of computers as a medium is permitted only for the 3-D views and the formatting if necessary.

Sheets should be properly numbered on the back to enable display in a calendar format.

 The formatting and matter shall not bear the name and/or any other identity of either the participants
or the participating college.

 The format should contain a square box of 25 mm x 25 mm at the bottom right hand corner next to the
NASA logo, in which would be entered the entry code number, by the organizing Institute.

 The format should bear the NASA logo as per NASA specifications on the bottom right hand corner.
Entries with incorrect logos shall not be considered for marking.

The format should contain 'The ANDC 2007' clearly and legibly.

 Two copies of a report of maximum 15 (fifteen) nos. A-4 size sheets should accompany each entry.
One copy should not bear the name and/or any other identity of either the participants or the participating
college in any manner and shall be returned with the entry. The second copy should clearly state the
college name on the first page (not on the cover). Both copies shall be necessarily hardbound and shall
carry the NASA logo as per NASA specifications on the cover page. Reports with incorrect logos shall not
be submitted to the jury for marking.
